Notes for: Frederick Bodine

From Ronny Bodine (Oct. 30, 2020):

The birth of Frederick Bodine on 17 October 1784 was recorded in the family bible which was included by his mother when she filed for a widow's pension based upon her husband's military service.

From Hunterdon County, New Jersey Marriage Records:
Frederick Bodine and Mary O'Donald were married 13 Nov 1808 by Holloway W. Hunt, V.D.M.

From "Portrait and Biographical Album of Oakland County, Michigan." Chicago: Chapman Bros., 1891, p. 919.
JOHN BODINE, a retired merchant at Birmingham, was born in Baptistown, Hunterdon County, N.J., December 19, 1815, and is a son of Frederick and Mary O. (Daniels) Bodine, natives of New Jersey and Pennsylvania respectively. Frederick was a tailor by trade and also kept a tavern for many years, and was the father of seven children, namely: Mary A., Jane, Hannah, John, Rebecca, William and Christian. The mother of this family died when John was about nine years of age...

Although the foregoing biographical sketch notes Frederick's wife as Mary O. Daniels, the marriage records for Hunterdon County record her name as Mary O'Donald.

Deed of 2 Aug 1818 from Andrew M. Prevost & wife Hannah of Philadelphia, PA to Frederick Bodine of Kingwood Township, Hunterdon County, for $240, 14/100th acre in the Village of Alexandria, Alexandria Twp. Recorded 3 Feb 1820 in Hunterdon Co. Deed Book 30, p. 349.

Although Mary Bodine was said to have died about 1825, as noted above, the following two deeds and censuses make it clear she did not. On the other hand, if Mary did die about 1825, then it appears Frederick's otherwise undocumented 2nd wife was also named Mary.

Deed of 28 Nov 1825 from Frederick Bodine and Mary, his wife, of Greenwich Township, Warren County to Edmond Porter, of the village of Alexandria, Alexandria Township, Hunterdon County. For $400, 14/100th acre in the village of Alexandria. Recorded 29 Nov 1825 in Hunterdon Co. Deed Book, 39, p.428.

Deed of 14 April 1826 from John S. Maxwell & wife Mary of Greenwich Township, Warren County to Frederick Bodine of the same, for $400, 87 perches in Stewartsville, Greenwich Township now occupied by Frederick Bodine. Recorded 28 June 1926 in Warren Co. Deed Book 2, p. 278.

1830 Greenwich Twp., Warren Co., NJ: Frederick BODINE males 1(5-9), 1(10-14), 1(40-49); females 1(0-4), 1(10-14), 1(15-19), 1(40-49).

Deed of 1 April 1833 from Frederick Bodine and Mary, his wife, of Greenwich Township, Warren County to Lawrence Dean of Greenwich Township. For $600, 87 perches of land in Greenwich Township. Recorded 27 Aug 1833 in Warren Co. Deed Book 11, p. 288.

1840 Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co., NJ: Frederick BODINE males 1(50-59); females 1(10-14), 1(50-59).

Frederick Bodine and his wife died intestate leaving no record of a will or administration. The foregoing constitutes all recorded land transactions involving Frederick Bodine in Hunterdon and Warren Counties. Of the seven named children, Mary, Jane and Christian appear to have died young as they are not evident in the censuses of 1830 and 1840, nor in the marriage records of this time period. Since Frederick and Mary married in November 1808, Mary and Jane may have been born between 1809 and 1814, as the children seem to be named in their birth order with son John born in 1815, the first with an attested birth year, and Christian was born after 1825 and died before 1830.
