Notes for: John Henry Bodine, Col.

Since this John and Henry are buried near each other and their wives both have the surname "Van Orden," I am guessing that this John is Henry's son.

John Bodine and Ann Maria Van Orden [parents] md 4/10/1845 in New Paltz Reformed Dutch Church
In the Van Orden bible, John is described as a ‘noted marskman’. I found an article which describes him as a mason and a knight templar. John and Ann Maria are buried in Modena. John’s Modena dates are 1825-1904
research (from ancestry.com/NY census info):
1850 census John Bodine, ulster/Plattekill, p245
John, age 25, Farmer
Ann M., age 23 (this age is a little off)
and a domestic girl, Mary, age 14
1860 census John Bodine, ulster/Marlborough, p462
1880 census, ulster/Plattekill, p55D
Ann Bodine, age 73, keeping house – this age isn’t right; I’ll have to check the image; maybe 53?
Adeline Bodine, dau, 38, at home.
12/23/03 – checked image. Sure does look like 73. Adeline’s age could be 38 or 39.
I’ll have to look for Adeline in the 1920 census!
John Bodine’s Parents: Henry Bodine (6/24/1796-2/7/1868) and Margaret Van Orden (9/17/1794-12/30/1873). Both are also buried in Modena Cemetery (Plattekill, NY). Henry’s parents: John Bodine & Mary Frint – I think they are buried in Montgomery’s Brick Church Cemetery.
5/2004: There is a John Bodine (1832-1921) in Bullville Methodist cemetery. Not a relation, but interesting: Priv. Co. A 168 Inf. NYV in the Civil War.
5/2004: Found Henry & Margaret as well as John & Ann Maria in Modena Cemetery.

Subject: Obit for John Bodine (1826-1904)

Hi Dave

Attached is an obituary for John Bodine (1826-1904), who is apparently well known in the American rifle community as "Old Reliable" and for his success in an 1875 team competition in Dublin, Ireland.

It gives his correct death place as New Paltz NY, and his full death date.

I hope this will be helpful to you.

COL. JOHN HENRY BODINE DEAD
(14 January 1826 - 30 May 1904)

HE WAS ONCE A FAMOUS AMERICAN RIFLE SHOT.

"Old Reliable" Colonel John Henry Bodine, once a famous American rifle shot, died at the home of his sister-in-law in New Paltz Monday night. He had been out of health for more than a year.

Many years ago, Colonel Bodine was in the office of the Ramsdell Transportation Company. Afterward he was a clerk In the National Bank of Newburgh. He then went into the freighting business and ran a barge from Highland to New York City. His wife died many years ago [1899].

Colonel Bodine gained international fame as a rifle shot. He competed abroad with several American teams and was captain of some of them. In a great match at Creedmoor, it was his last shot that won, and he was dubbed "Old Reliable." Perhaps the most widely discussed match that he took part in was in 1875, when the American team beat the Irish riflemen in a match near Dublin. The Americans won.

On his return to Newburgh, Hudson River Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, presented to him a magnificent Maltese cross decorated with diamonds. He was a charter member of the lodge. He was over six feet tall and straight as a gun barrel.

Colonel Bodine's funeral will be held at 11 o'clock at his late home, Thursday morning. The interment will be in Modena, Ulster County. A delegation from Hudson River Lodge. Free and Accepted Masons, of Newburgh, will attend the services.
