There are many inconsistencies in the spelling of her first name. They
appear among the eleven founders of the Tappan Church as "Cozine
Haring and his wife Maria Blauvelt." At the baptism of four of their
children she is entered as "Maria" or "Marya." However, at the baptism
of her other children (with one exception where she appears as
Margrietje, which we know is an error), and in frequent other
instances where she appears as a witness in the records of the Tappan,
Hackensack and Schraalenburgh churches, she appears variously as
"Maritje," "Maritie," "Marretje," or "Marytie." She is referred to in
her husband's will as "Maretie."
The name "Marretje," when anglicized, usually becomes either "Maria"
or "Mary," although it can also be found to develop into "Martha." To
confuse matters more, this couple had two daughters, Marritje and
Maria, both of whom are mentioned in his will and lived to maturity.
