In April 1930, Ethelbert Bodine lived with his mother and step-father in Pittsburgh working as an automotive stock manager. He appears in the Pittsburgh City Directory of 1931 as Bert J. Bodine parts manager for Lindford Motor Co. In the 1934 directory he is listed as Bert BODIN with wife Joan, auto repair. In the 1943 directory he is Bert J. BODINE, with no wife listed and in the 1950 directory he is Bert J. BODINE, mechanic, Midtown Motors.
Bert Bodine was recorded twice in the 1940 census, in both instances as neighbor to his mother and stepfather living at 1325 Oakridge.

Sometime between 1940 and 1943 Bert and Joan Bodine separated as she does not appear in any Pittsburgh City Directory after 1942. The Social Security Administration recorded her death in April 1974 with her last address as Bethel Park, Allegheny County. Bethel Park Borough (since 1978 the Municipality of Bethel Park) is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area.
