Notes for: John N. Bodine

There were no witnesses named at the baptism.

I have made a lot of guesses in the data on this family. Take all of this with a grain of salt.

I did not have much in the way of a family for this John and Susan, but the evidence seems to indicate he is the son of Francis Bodine and Margaret Sluyter. The only data I had for their son was that he was baptized on Feb. 7, 1790. The John N. Bodine who married Susan was born between January 10, 1790 and February 9, 1790 according to his age at death on this tombstone (see below). That is a good enough match for me to tentatively link these two Johns together. More evidence is needed, though. The names from these families also have many matches.

Many from John and Susan's family seem to be buried in the Presbyterian Ground in Yorktown, Westchester Co., NY. That is not far south of Ulster Co., NY. Here are those names:

Bodine, Baby Susie ------
Bodine, Cornelia, dau of John & Martha, Sept. 24, 1865 - Sept. 25, 1884
Bodine, Cornelius B, died Nov. 9, 1876 age 34 yrs 6 mos
Bodine, Fannie, wife of Francis, died Apr. 17, 1887 age 47 years
Bodine, Francis, May 12, 1836 - July 9, 1865
Bodine, Frank, Oct. 28, 1859 - Nov. 3, 1876
Bodine, John, died Aug. 9, 1870 age 80 yrs 6 mos
Bodine, Nancy, dau of John & Susan, died Feb. 29, 1896 age 73 years
Bodine, Sarah A., dau of William & Rebecca, died Jan. 23, 1849 age 5 yrs 11 mos 7 days
Bodine, Susan, wife of John, died May 18, 1875 age 78 yrs 6 mos

My guess is that John and Susan had at least the following children: William (married Rebecca), John (married Martha), Francis (married Fannie), Cornelius B., Nancy, Margaret and Rebecca. They may have had more.

From The Highland Democrat (Highland, N.Y.) of 16 May 1903:
[Partial abstract] John Bodine Steele is a native of this village, having first seen the light of day in a house on Washington street opposite the entrance to Drum Hill school on the 16th day of May, 1859, and is celebrating the 44th anniversary of that event to-day. He is the son of the late Henry and Hannah Bodine Steele. He comes from a lighting stock, his great-great grandfather, Colonel John Hyatt, being a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His great uncle, George McChain, and grandfather, John Bodine, served their country in the war of 1812 with Great Britain, and his father, Henry Steele, helped save the union in the civil war.

The foregoing claims John Bodine served in the War of 1812. Of those named John Bodine serving from New York it appears the unit to which John Bodine was assigned was Hardenbergh's Regiment of New York Militia which was organized in Ulster County and with which he served as a Private.

From Westchester County, New York Will Book 62, p. 318-325.
