Notes for: Peter Bodine

Peter and Mary were listed as the parents of David Rickoff Bodine. Alison Wallner checked the Marriage Index NJ 1680-1900, Marriages NY, NJ and PA from the NY Genealogical & Biographical Soc. Church Records, and the Vital Records Index North America and none of them listed a marriage for Peter Bodine and Mary Smith.

Ronny wrote that Peter Bodine and wife Mary are named as the parents of Joseph Bodine in his 1849 New Jersey death record. Mary apparently died before 1830 as the older man living in the household of David R. Bodine must be his father Peter. In 1850, Peter Bodine lived with his widowed daughter-in-law (the wife of son Joseph) and grandson Ezra. David R. Bodine served as security for the 1849 estate administration of Joseph Bodine.

I think Ronny is probably right, but we still need to keep looking for better sources for this family.

LDS listed David Bodine's parents as Peter Bodine and Mary Smith. Supposedly, they were married about 1807 in Ringoes, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. She was born on February 8, 1777 in Ringoes.

I was thinking that this Peter Bodine was probably the son of Peter and Esther Bodine since both lines have a Conine marrying in. Then Ronny sent me the following which pretty much cements this relationship for me (for now anyway): Among the correspondence of Mary Elizabeth Sinnot, author of Annals of the Sinnott, Rogers, Coffin, Corlies, Reeves, Bodine and Allied Families (J. P. Lippincott: Philadelphia, 1905) there is a listing of the children of Peter Bodine. The author is Jane L. DeWitt (1849-1928) of 320 Mifflin Ave., Scranton, Pa. It reads:

Children of Peter Bodine
John born 26 May 1770 married Agnus Matheson or Esther Matheson 1 Dec 1795
Peter married Mary Smith & had a son David m. Mary A. Higgins
Gabriel
Seaborn
Agnus married Asher Atkinson
Phoebe " Abram Low (117 in Low Genealogy)
Polly married Mr. Tinbrook (Cornelius Tin Broeck or Derrick Ten Broeck before 1792)
Catherine " Bunnell
Hester
Elizabeth " Striker
Joseph
Nancy

Ronny also found the following:

From: History of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Flemington, N.J., 1822-1914, p. 4.
1824. Peter Bodine was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Flemington.

Peter Bodine born 1803 (this Peter's probable son) seems too young to have been included on this board, but the elder would have been a prime candidate and places both Peters in Flemington.

Here is a document Ronny found that I think he said applies either to this Peter Bodine or his father.

Grace Amelia Gerard (1869-1938), daughter of Jemima Atkinson Bodine Gerard (1845-1919) and granddaughter of David Rickoff Bodine (1808-1867), corresponded with Mary Elizabeth Sinnott, author of the 1905 "Annals of the Sinnott, Rogers, Coffin, Corlies, Reeves, Bodine and Allied Families," and provided the following record of her family. This correspondence was included in the collection of Ms. Sinnott's papers on deposit with the Pennsylvania Historical Society. This family was not included in Ms. Sinnott's genealogy as she apparently was unable to assign Peter Bodine to any of the family lines.

This is a copy from a paper found in the family Bible of Daniel R. Bodine.

Grace A. Gerard, New Britain, Ct.

The marriage of Peter and Mary Bodine in 1797 undoubtedly took place in Hunterdon County as it is evident Peter Bodine lived there from before 1792 until his death.
