Notes for: John Bodine

There is a Staten Island death record for a John Bodine who was buried on August 3, 1851. His age at death was 24 years and 9 months. Another comment about his said "N.Y." I think it must be this John.

From Elizabeth's Find-A-Grave site:

Eliza Ann was the second of the nine (known) children born to Peter Henry Johnson (son ofJacob Johnson & Elizabeth Haughwout) and Ann Bogart (daughter of Simon Bogart & Mary Howlin). Her family left Castleton, Staten Island, NY in 1842 & settled in Kane Co., IL where her father purchased 525 acres from David Beeler in Blackberry Township just east of present-day Elburn. Johnson’s Mound (originally Beeler’s Mound) was on their land.

Eliza, who is sometimes listed as Elizabeth, was included on the 1850 Blackberry, Kane Co., IL census with her parents. On April 10th, 1858 in Kane Co., IL she married John Bodine, the oldest of the nine children born to Jacob Bodine (1799-1845) & Johanna “Hannah” Housman (1797-1881). Her husband John Bodine was also a Staten Island native & the couple returned there and settled in the Castleton area. Two daughters, Anna Augusta & Louisa Irene, were born to the couple and the family were listed on the Castleton census for 1860, 1865, 1870 & 1875. (Note: the 1860 census includes an ‘Eliza Maburn 1849 IL”- likely Eliza’s niece Teresa Mayborne, the daughter of Eliza’s sister Teresa Johnson & Joseph H Mayborne, who was either visiting from Illinois or perhaps residing with them. The 1865 census, which also includes her in their household, lists her as Tresa Meyborn 1849).

After John Bodine’s death in 1876 Eliza remained in Castleton with her daughters (shown on the 1880 census) but her movements between 1880-1895 are uncertain. In 1895 she was living with or visiting her younger sister Louisa, wife of Lathrop Reed, in Saint Paul, MN. By 1900 Eliza & daughter Louisa were living in Hyde Park, Chicago in the household of Eliza’s daughter Anna, wife of Herman Stursberg, mother of two. In 1910 Eliza was living in Geneva with daughter Louisa & her husband Benjamin Franklin Smith. Eliza died in Chicago.

Mother of two:

1). Anna Augusta née Bodine Stursberg (1861-1936). Anna married Herman Stursberg (1855-1936) on January 17th, 1883 at St Mary’s Church in West New Brighton, Staten Island, NY. The couple had two children before divorcing in the early 1900’s. (Later census records list them as “widowed”). Herman moved to California while Anna remained in the Chicago area. Benjamin F Smith, widowed from Anna’s sister, later lived with her.
Mother of:
-Louisa Hedwig Anna née Stursberg Mayer (14 Dec 1883 Holyoke, MA- ?, sometime after 1940). Married an unknown Mayer. Widowed or divorced early. No known children. Louisa was back & forth between Massachusetts & Europe (Zurich, Switzerland).
-Paul William Stursberg (28 Mar 1885 Holyoke, MA- 27 Oct 1913 Holyoke, MA). Married Helen G Mackintosh (sic) on June 17th, 1911 in Holyoke. No known children.

2). Louisa Irene née Bodine Smith (27 June 1863 Castleton, NY- 3 Nov 1926 Chicago). Louisa married c. 1901 to Benjamin Franklin Smith (16 Nov 1844 Ohio (or March 1844)- 2 April 1930 Chicago). A marriage license was applied for in Chicago on January 21st, 1901 but no record has been found for the actual marriage. The couple lived in Geneva, IL with her mother & later in Chicago with her sister Anna (now divorced). No children were born from their union. Early records for her husband B. F. (Benjamin Franklin) Smith are difficult to confirm. Parents unknown (Father born in VT, Mother in CT), he was previously married on November 13th, 1873 in Chicago to Annie F Quinn (c. 1848 NYC, NY- 30 June 1897 Chicago, not on FAG).
Note: Louisa’s YOB appears in later records as late as 1867.
