The only information I had on him before was his name and those of his parents. I then was sent the burial information below:

Richland Co., OH Cemeteries, pg. 198:
Mattoon, James N. 1843-1928 h/o Maria M. Bodine
Maria M. Bodine 1848-1919 w/o James N.

Therefore, I've made the guess that the James N. Mattoon mentioned in the burial info above is the same as this James Newton Mattoon. However, this is only a guess and I could be wrong.
