Notes for: Francis ("Frank") G. Bodine

I wouldn't doubt this this Francis Bodine descends from Francis Bodine and Margaret Sluyter, possibly through their son Jacob Bodine. I think that Jacob Bodine might be the Jacob Budine/Bodine who married Elizabeth Delamater. This is just a lot of guessing, though.

In the 1870 Census of Fox Township, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, Frank's farm was valued at $1000. A John Bodine, age 58 and born in New York, was living with this family. This is probably his father, but it did not say. I am guessing that the Frank J. and Harriet M. Bodine buried in the Hilton Cemetery is this couple. The dates and names are too much of a coincidence. In the Hilton Cemetery, there is also a William (1877-1947), Jennifer (1901-1935), Frank R. (1898-1966), Emma M. (1876-1967), and Burt F. (18??-1963).

I later found this family in the 1880 Census of West Burlington, Bradford Co., PA. John Bodine was living with them again. He is listed as Frank's father in this census. John was 68 and born in New York. Both of John's parents were also from New York. Frank's parents were both born in New York. Frank was listed as a blacksmith.

The following must apply to this Frank Bodine. It comes from the Bradford Co., PA GenWeb site and is an excerpt from the "Bradford (County) Reporter" of December 18, 1884 for West Burlington:

F. Bodine was a faithful soldier in the late war, and comes from a line of heroes. He enlisted in the 207th Regiment in August, 1864, and was connected with the army of the Potomac. He was at the engagements at Fort Steadman, Weldon Railroad, Hatcher’s Run, in and about Petersburg, and the closing scenes at five Forks. He was twice wounded. Mr. Bodine’s great-grandfather, Frank Bodine, came from France, and served through the Revolution. He was several times wounded, and lived to be ninety years old. His grandfather, Jeremiah Robinson, was a soldier in the war of 1812 and the Mexican war. Mr. Bodine engaged in blacksmithing at West Burlington for several years.

From Ronny Bodine (August 3, 2020):

From Bradford Reporter (Towanda, PA) of December 18, 1884 for West Burlington:

In 1860 (17 Aug, Family 2324), Frank Bodine, age 22, was living with the family of Edward Loomis, master wagon maker, in West Burlington Township, Bradford County, and working as a wagon maker. He was also counted (17 Aug 1860, Family 2328), as Francis Bodine, age 20, living with his parents in West Burlington Township, engaged as a day laborer. It would appear that both his employer and his parents ensured he was not missed by the census taker. In 1880, Frank Bodine, age 40, was now working as a blacksmith in West Burlington Township and in 1900, aged 61, he was a farmer. He reported then that in 38 years of marriage his wife had borne 5 children, all then living. In 1910, Frank and Harriet Bodine lived with their son Will in West Burlington Township. Frank reported that all 5 of their children still lived. In 1920, Harriet Bodine, age 75 and widowed, lived with her son Will. Frank and Harriet Bodine were buried in Hilton Cemetery, Bradford County. Harriet (Patrick) Bodine was the daughter of Simeon Patrick.
