Notes for: Thomas Smith Bodine
LDS says he is "of Lancaster, PA." There is a Thomas S. Bodine, age 33, who enlisted for the Union in Ohio on July 3, 1863. He was a sargeant.
It appears he is buried in Pioneer Rest Cemetery in Richland Co., OH. The information on his stone says that he died on March 27, 1864 at Andersonville, Georgia at age 38-0-7. However, it says that he was the grandson of Peter and Elizabeth Erving. That must be a mistake. It should be Susan Ervin/Erving.
Joan Best wrote, "Just looked and found, in Ripley Twp., Huron Co., Ohio: Thomas S. Bodine, age 24, hotel keeper, b. NY; wife Elizabeth, age 20, b. NJ(?); and 1/12 year old daughter listed as Namelus, b. OH ... I can speculate that the couple shortly named their daughter Maria. Living with them were Ann Beverie, 31, b. NY; and son Russel, 5, b. OH. This was recorded on Nov. 8, 1850. Is she the same as Amy Bevier and children Russel and Susan recorded as living with Susanna, widow of Peter on 16th of Sept. [1850] in Cass Twp., Richland Co., OH?"
The above info may or may not apply to this Thomas S. Bodine, but it is very likely that it does. The birth years match - 1826.
From Ronny Bodine:
Mary (Parke) Bodine was the daughter of David and Elizabeth (Weller) Parke.
From Ohio federal Census Records:
1850 (8 Nov) Ripley Twp., Huron Co.: Thomas S. BODINE 24 NY Hotel Keeper, Elizabeth 20 NJ, Nameless (f) 1/2 OH, Ann BEVIER 30 NY, Russel 5 OH, other hotel guests.
Thomas S. Bodine served as a Sergeant with Company K, 45th Ohio Infantry (USA). He was captured 15 Nov 1863 at the Holston River in Tennessee and interred in Andersonville Prison where he died of dysentery on 28 March 1864. A grave marker stands in Pioneer Rest Cemetery, Plymouth, Richland County, Ohio which reads Thos. Smith Bodine Died Aged 38 Y 7 D, but this may just be a memorial stone.
