Notes for: Henry F. Bodine

Joan Best found a Henry Bodine and a Margaret Bodine in the 1850 Census of Lower Augusta Twp., Northumberland Co., PA. She sent this:

I went looking for Margaret in the 1850 census. I found a 70 or 76 (either a bad 6 or a so-so 0) year old Margaret Bodine (right age for our Margaret) living with William Fiester (33) and family (wife is Mary, 32). They live next door on one side, to Jacob Shipman (49) married to Rebecca (49) and on the other side Isaac Fuster (24) and wife Charity (26). In this household is a baby and 13 year old Henry Bodine. These families lived in Lower Augusta Twp., Northumberland Co., PA.

Joan later wrote with this:

I've been meaning to tell you that I went back to that 1850 census where I found Henry Bodine and Margaret Bodine in with Henry's mother's people, and looked very carefully at the numbers. The first number continues to look like a "7" but I compared it with a lot of other numbers by the same writer, including family numbers which are consecutive. His "7"s had long tails. It turns out that this is a "2". He leaves off the bottom line of the 2. By comparing the number of Margaret's age with the consecutive family numbers several pages previous, I conclude that she was 20 as the 20 notation in the sequence is almost identical to the notation for her age.

This would make Margaret a probable sister to Henry and a daughter to Levi. They are apparently orphans, as I don't find the mother anywhere around, each child living in a maternal uncle's household, next door to each other. Oh, the things cemetery records could clear up for us !!

Page 723 - "Henry F. Bodine, a prominent citizen of Miners Mills, was born in Lower Augusta township, Northumberland Co, Pa., May 15, 1837, and is a son of Levi and Jane (Feaster) Bodine, respectively natives of Greene and Berks counties, Pa., and of French and German origin. In his father's family there were four children, three of whom are living, and of them Henry F. is the third. Our subject received a common-school education, and at the age of eighteen years learned the plasterer's trade, which has been the chief occupation of his life. He came to Miners Mills in 1875, and in 1883 built his residence, now occupied by his son-in-law, John Keats. Mr. Bodine was married, March 6, 1860 to Miss Lucinda, daughter of John and Hannah (Runyan) Swisher, natives of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, respectively, and of English lineage and very early settlers in New England. They had three children, viz: Howard, who died in infancy, Addie J., and John, who died at the age of three years. Major Ringold, so famous in the war of 1812, was an uncle of Hannah Runyan, and Mr. Bodine's great-grandfather was in the Revolutionary war. Addie J. Bodine, daughter of our subject, was educated in the public school, the Bloomsburg State Normal School, and at Jackson Seminary, New York City. She married John Keats, by whom she has three children, viz: Olive Adele (who has much elocutionary power for a girl of eight summers), Ethel L. and Harold B. This gentleman and family attend the Methodist Episcopal Church; he is a member of the O. U. A. M. and the G. A. R.; in his political views he is a Democrat.
