Notes for: Jefferson Berdine / Bodine

I wonder if his marriage date of 1823 wasn't really 1828 and someone transcribed it incorrectly. If it was 1823, then his wife would have only been eleven years old. If it was 1828, she would have been sixteen. That would be more acceptable and also their first child, Nancy, was born in about 1829. I think Jefferson died without a will (Chancery Court Records, 1847-1853, p. 273). Someone has also told me that Jefferson married on December 20, 1823.

"This book is Respectfully Dedicated To A Very Special Friend, Evelyn Wylene Pafford, Mount Juliet, Tennessee"

Preface:
"This book is a companion book for the other books that have been done on Wilson County, covering the 1800's. It primarily covers the period from 1827 to 1869. However, it does include events prior to 1827 and past 1869. The book is unique in that some of the records are in private hands, and are not available to the public at large. I am referring specifically to the chancery court records and to the taxt [sic] lists. The tax lists are of value in that they provide a county census for the years covered.Thomas E. Partlow"

I'll give you the rundown for the Tax List of 1828 and 1829 in another post. No Bodines are mentioned in the tax list of 1828 at all not even in Captain Jackson's Company but some of the same surnames present in his company in the tax list of 1827 are still there in 1828. An indication that the companies were arranged according to neighborhoods. Also in doing research on the Chandlers and their neighbors in Wilson County, TN, when I compare the entries of the tax lists of 1827, 1828 and 1829 to the census of 1820 I find that the names are similar and roughly follow the same order as the companies of the tax lists. Again indicating that both the census of 1820 AND the tax lists were done primarily according to proximity.

Unfortunately the census of 1830 of Wilson Co, TN doesn't seem to follow any pattern of enumerating individuals by neighborhood. Luckily for Wilson Co, TN researchers we have the 1827-1829 tax lists to more closely narrow down where target individuals actually physically lived at least prior to the 1830 census. The 1827-1829 tax lists also sometimes indicate approximate dates of death in that some entries are marked, "Heirs of PERSON's NAME" and sometimes the number of acres is given after that in those lists.

From Ronny Bodine:

The 1850 Mortality Schedule for Wilson County, Tennessee records that Jefferson Berdine, age 45, born in Tennessee, farmer, died May 1850. On 1 July 1850, Henry D. Lester was appointed administrator of the estate of Jefferson Bodine (Wilson Co. Court Minutes, 1848-1856, p. 218). The Wilson County Chancery Court Minutes, 1847-1853, p. 341, for 10 Jan 1851 record Jefferson Bodine departed this life leaving a widow named Margaret and the following children who are all minors: Abbot, Mirandy, Sarah Miles, Nancy, Elizabeth, Susan, Sophia, Margaret and Thomas Bodine. On 5 July 1858, John A. Lester was appointed guardian of Sophia M. and Margaret Bodine, minor heirs of Jefferson Bodine, decd, securies William J. Lester and Henry D. Lester. (Wilson Co. Court Minutes, 1856-1858, p. 363).

The 1840 census of Wilson County listed the family of Jefferson Berdine (living next door to Isaac Berdine) as males 2(0-4), 1(30-39) and females 1(0-4), 1(5-9), 2(10-14) and 1(30-39). Margaret Berdine, age 38, was living 1850 in Wilson County with 6 of her children. On 3 Sept 1855, Henry D. Lester was appointed administrator of her estate (Wilson Co. Court Minutes, , 1852-1856, p. 495). The estate sale of Margaret Bodin was recorded 14 Nov 1855 (Wilson Co. Wills & Inventories, 1853-1858, p. 245).

1850 Wilson Co., TN: Margaret BERDINE 38 TN, Nancy 21 TN, Thomas 16 TN, Susan 12 TN, Elizabeth 9 TN, Sophia 7 TN, Margaret 5 TN, John MILES 22 TN farmer, Sarah MILES 19 TN.

Their marriage in 1823 named the couple Jefferson Bodine and Peggy Furgason. As Margaret was aged 38 in 1850, it appears she was just 11 years old at her marriage. Yet, the 1840 census gave her age as between 30 and 39, the same as that of her husband. It would not be unreasonable to assume her age in 1850 was in error and that it should have read 48, thus placing her birth about 1802.

Also from Ronny Bodine:

Wilson County Chancery Court Minutes, 1846-1853.
p. 256, 12 Jan 1850. This case came to be heard for the first time, concerning the sale of land owned by John Bodine, decd, to the highest bidder.

p. 273, 2 July 1850. "It appearing to the court that since the last term of this court Jefferson Bodine has departed this life..."

p. 341, 10 Jan 1851. "It appearing to the court that since the last term of this court Jefferson Bodin ___ of the Compt. has departed this life leaving a widow named Margaret and the following children who are all minors, Abbot, Mindy, Sarah, Miles, Nancy, Elizabeth, Susan, Sophia, Margaret & Thomas Bodine. Henry D. Lester has been appointed administrator of said Jefferson." The records goes on to designate Margaret Bodine, the widow, and the said Henry D. Lester as administrator and as next friend of the said minor children who are to be made parties complaintants in this case.

p. 386, 9 July 1851: There are eight unnamed heirs of John Bodine, deceased, who are entitled to shares of fund: Simpson Bennett who married Charity, is entitled to the share of Isaac Bodine by purchase; 1/8th of fund to be retained by clerk for the heirs of Polly Milton who died in Ilinois. The clerk and master shall ascertain where said children are and notify them of their right to this fund. Jefferson Bodine's share to his administrator.

p. 478, 8 July 1852: The land was sold to Henry D. Carter, the highest bidder, for $183.00.

Wilson County Chancery Court Minutes, 1857-1860.
p. 380, 7 July 1859: Isaac Bodine & others vs. Ex Parte. "This cause came to be heard this day 7th July 1859 before Chancellor Ridley..." "And it appearing to the court that Wiley Bodine is dead leaving no children; and that the children of Polly Milton, decd, have not been heard from for more than seven years, next before the presentations of this quititious--and that the said Wiley Bodine and the children of the said Polly Milton decd are entitled to two distributive shares in the estate of John Bodine decd, the same being about $48 to the share and now in the hands of the Clerk & Master of this court, and that the Brothers and sisters and their representatives of said Wiley and Polly decd who are before the court are their representatives and next heirs. It is therefore ordered by the Court that the Clerk & Master pay the said shares of Wiley and Polly to those who are entitled after taking refunding bonds from said distributions."
