Colonel (RET) Thomas Bernard Bodine Sr Obituary
Colonel (RET) Thomas Bernard Bodine Sr, 87, passed away Christmas Eve, December 24, 2023 at Clark Memorial Hospital. He was surrounded by his family who loved him so much. Born on February 24,1936 to Preston Bodine and Minnie (Maloney) Bodine in Jeffersonville, IN, he leaves behind an immense legacy of love and service.
A native of Jeffersonville, he graduated from Jeffersonville High School and Northwood University, where he held two earned degrees. Colonel Bodine retired in 1991 following a 37 year military career, which included 25 years as a Federal Fulltime Army National Guard officer. At his retirement, he was serving on the Directorate Staff of the Adjutant General of Indiana as Director of Public Affairs. He graduated from the Indiana Military Academy in July, 1962, where he received a federal commission as Second Lieutenant, Infantry. His many military schools culminated with graduation from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He served for 5 years on the State Military Academy Advisory Council (SMAAC), which advised the Chief of the National Guard Bureau on national military academy operations and programs of instruction. As a SMAAC member, Colonel Bodine represented 10 states and was awarded a National Guard Bureau Minuteman Award. He is past President of the National Guard Association of Indiana, past Secretary of the 38th Infantry Division Association and served 6 years as a member of the Indianapolis Area Veteran's Day Council, during which he chaired the annual Indianapolis Veteran's Day Parade. He was made a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1989 by Governor Robert Orr and again in 1991 by Governor Evan Bayh. That same year, he was made a member of the Legion of Hoosier Heroes. He was named Kentucky Colonel by Governor Wallace Wilkinson in 1991. In 1996, Colonel Bodine was appointed member #14 in the Indiana Honorary Regiment of Militia. Among others, he was awarded the US Army Meritorius Service Medal, the US Army Commendation Medal, the US Army Achievement Medal and the US Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal. He was a faithful member of New Chapel United Methodist Church. In his retirement, he served 20 years as Secretary of the Clark County Sheriff's Merit Board. He also collected and restored vintage Cushman Motor Scooters and was a member of the Cushman Club of America, The Vintage Motorbike Club of America and the Hoosier Cushman Club.
Despite all of his accomplishments, he loved nothing more and nothing made him prouder than his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joyce (Watson)Bodine, daughter Joni Boon (David) of Lagrange, KY, son Thomas Bodine Jr (Donna Mattox) of Lagrange, KY, three grandchildren, Jillian Boon of Miami Beach, FL, Samuel Bodine of Owensboro, KY and Jacob Boon of Nashville, TN and a vast network of cousins, nieces and nephews, in-laws and dear friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 21 from 2-8pm at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville. A full honors military funeral conducted by the Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit will be held Monday, January 22 at 11am at Scott Funeral Home with burial at New Chapel Cemetery. Visitation on Monday, January 22 will also be from 10am – 11am at Scott Funeral Home prior to the funeral service. The family asks that expressions of sympathy be directed to Wounded Warrior Project or The Warrior Dog Foundation.
