Notes for: Henry Vandewater Bodine

Ronny and I think this is most likely the "H. V. Bodine" mentioned in the emails below.

Hey Dave,

"Senator Bodine" refers to John Forman Bodine 1821-1883 who was State Senator from Gloucester County and his nephew was Henry Vandewater Bodine 1852-1936. Perhaps he is the mysterious H. V. Bodine.

Hey Ronny,
Do you know who this might be? There are several messages in this string that might help you. I can't remember if I asked you before, but I don't remember seeing this info about a "Senator Bodine."
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave. Just wanted to follow up with you and give you a little information regarding H.V. Bodine. A fellow stoneware collector found this on newspapers.com. It was from March 24, 1881. I still don't have a name but it is a step in the right direction.

Quote: "Mr. H. V. Bodine, a nephew of Senator Bodine, is engaged in the mercantile business in Clinton, Hunterdon County [NJ]"

Well, I am stumped, too. I looked at women with names starting with H as well and got nowhere. If you figure something out, do let me know. Sorry I couldn't help. I gave it a good amount of time today but no luck.
Best regards,
Dave Bodine

I appreciate your help Dave. It is hard to date Fulper stoneware. I would think it would be from 1870 to 1920. The H is definitely an H. Fulper had only a handful of potters who would do script on these pieces. I have several other pieces with an identical H.

Nothing yet. I will have to try again tonight. I'm going out for a while right now. Could that H be some other letter? And do you have any idea what year it is from?

Yes, It is H.V. Bodine Clinton, NJ. I know the Bodine's were in this area. He had a lumber mill in Pittstown. I have been unable to determine the name associated with this crock.

Hi James,
Can you give me a full name from the stoneware? Is it H. V. Bodine Clinton, ?? And where do you think this person was from (town, county, state). Anything else you know would help.

From Ronny Bodine:

The marriage of Henry V. Bodine and Sallie E. Smith, both of Gloucester County was reported in the Woodbury "Constitution" of 20 Sept 1876. Henry and Sarah Bodine were living 1880 in Tansboro, Camden County and 1900 in Williamstown, Gloucester County where Henry worked as a insurance agent. In 1920, the couple was living in Trenton, Mercer County where Henry now worked as a bookkeeper for an asylum. In both 1900 and 1910, Sarah reported she had borne only 1 child who was no longer living. Henry and Sally Bodine were buried in Williamstown Methodist Church Cemetery, Gloucester County. The inscription on his gravestone is apparently no longer legible. The death of Mrs. Salley E. Bodine, of Trenton, formerly of Williamstown, was reported in the "Gloucester County Democrat" of 11 Oct 1928. No date of death was given.
