Notes for: Warden ("Ward") Bodine

LDS lists his name as "Warton," but that must be a mistake. His name on the 1900 Census of Fountain Co. (Wabash Twp.), IN says Warden. RB has his name as Warden. I'm not sure where "Watson" came from; so I'll go with Warden for now.

Watson Bodine

Here below is a picture from Bill Bodine of Ward and Maggie taken in 1920:

There is a Hardin Bodine listed in the 1880 Census of Wabash, IN. He is a son of John and Caroline Bodine. I wonder if this Hardin is not this Watson. Hardin was 25 and born in Indiana.

Subject: Suggested updates for website

Hi Dave,
I have some suggested updates to your Bodine genealogy website:

Von (Vaughn) Bodine (1907-1979)
- Add middle name of Emerson ... from daughter Lisa K. Rogge

2nd wife of Von (Vaughn) Bodine (1907-1979) should read:
- Augusta "Gussie" M. Cofer (vice Kouffer)... from marriage application and all censuses with her birth family
Died: 9 September 1979... specific day from her daughter Lisa K. Rogge
Father: Charles C. Cofer (1881-1945)... from marriage application, census & death certificate
Mother: Elisabetha "Ella" Weber (1891-1981)... from marriage application and census & death certificate.

Marriage application reference: "Indiana Marriages, 1811-2007" (FamilySearch database) provides image of Clark County, Indiana Marriage Book, p.444 that indicates a license was issued to Von E. Bodine and Augusta Cofer on 9 August 1931 and a marriage was performed on that day in Jeffersonville, IN. Von is listed as having been married once before. He was born to William Bodine (listed as L&N employee) and Florence W. Smith on 18 August 1907 in Boone County, IN. He was residing in Jeffersonville at the time of the marriage and working as a mechanic. His wife, Augusta, was born to Charles Cofer (listed as L&N employee who was born in Kentucky) and Ella Weber (who was born in Germany) on 24 Feb 1912 (her birth record indicates 1913) in Louisville, KY. She was residing in Louisville, KY at the time of the marriage. Officiator's name is listed as Clarence Paisley.

Warden/Watson ("Ward") Bodine (1854-1933)
- Recommend that Watson be removed from his name. I've done extensive research on this guy with many sources that I can provide you and have never seen him referred to anything but Warden or Ward. Someone has used Watson in his Findagrave posting, but I have no idea where it came from. I think it was a mistake made long ago and has just perpetuated itself over the years. If you wish, I'll provide you all my source documentation on this matter.
Other updates for Warden include specific birth and death dates from his death certificate below:
- Birth: 10 April 1954
- Death: 22 Dec 1933

Death certificate reference: From Ancestry.com, Indiana State Death Certificate #35042, Clark County, City of Jeffersonville, indicates Warden Bodine of 128 E. Chestnut St. died 22 Dec 1933 of Chronic Parenchymatous Nephritis and mitral insufficiency. He was a retired farmer born on 10 April 1854 in Covington, Indiana, and died at 79 yrs, 7 mo. and 29 days. His wife was listed as Maggie Bodine and his parents were John Bodine and Caroline Brewer.

Wife of Warden Bodine (1854-1933)...Additional information for
Margaret "Maggie" Morrison (1863-1934):
- Birth: 16 June 1863 in Fulton or Montgomery Co., Illinois ... birth date from death certificate and birthplace from censuses from her birth family
- Death: 18 May 1934
- Burial: 20 May 1934 ... both from death certificate
- Father: William Isaac Morrison (1834-1915)
- Mother: Mary Catherine McCammant (1838-1908) ... parents names from 1880 and prior censuses and marriage license.

Death certificate reference: From Ancestry.com, Indiana State Death Certificate #14702, Fountain County, Wabash Twp, indicates Maggie Bodine of RR1 Covington, died on 18 May 1934 at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 2 days of diabetes milliotis with complications from gangrene of the lower extremities. She was born in Illinois on 16 June 1863, the daughter of William Morrison and mother unknown. Her husband was Ward Bodine and she was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington on 20 May 1934.

Suggest you add a footnote for the following reference to their marriage information: Kansas Marriages,1855-1911 (FamilySearch database) provides an image of Crawford County, Kansas, Marriage Licenses, 1879-1882, Vol. B, p.359 indicates that Ward Bodine, 27, of Covington, Indiana, married Maggie Morrison, 20, of Crawford County, Kansas, on 1 Dec 1881. Marriage license was issued on 30 November 1881.

As an interesting side note, it appears that Maggie Morrison may have been a "mail order bride" as she appears to have never lived anywhere near Ward Bodine growing up and he had to travel from northern Indiana to southeast Kansas to marry Maggie.

Thanks for maintaining the Bodine genealogical database!
