Notes for: Lewis J. Bodine
It wasn't clear whether his middle initial was "I" or "J." We are assuming it is "J" for now.
Early Wills of Orange County:
- John Blake, Esq - Montgomery will dated Mar 4, 1823 probated Feb 3, 1826. Daughter Mary Bodine son-in-law Lewis I. Bodine.
I have seen a baptism date of February 14, 1774 for Lewis, but I'm still not sure where it comes from. There are records for 1774 at the Brick (German) Reformed Church in Montgomery, Orange Co., NY; so I'm assuming it must come from those. The MARRIAGE records have a gap of 39 years: from July 1, 1778 to Aug 29, 1817. For more on this, see p. 4, col 1, BRC, Montgomery, NY, Worden, 1982). There is something there, but I'm not sure what.
It is fairly certain that Lewis's first wife was Mary Kidd. Her two children by Lewis are mentioned in her father's will. Her father was Alexander Kidd. He wrote his will on July 28, 1819 (Mary died in 1802) and it was proved August 1, 1822 (Book G, page 33, Orange County Wills). He named sons, Charles and Alex; daughters Anne Weller and Margaret Kidd; granddaughter, Mary Kidd, grandson, Milton Bodine, grandaughter Mary Bodine, and granddaughter Mehitable Kidd. The executors were Charles and Alex Kidd and Henry Weller. Witnesses were Robert McCutchen, Lewis Millspaugh, and Benjamin McCutchen.
he Marriage Index of NY, lists a Lewis Bodine marrying a Mary Burne on December 18, 1800. However, this seems to be some other Lewis Bodine since the information for him and the information for Lewis I. Bodine do not match up. For instance, Milton was born about May 8, 1800 - before the marriage date of December 18, 1800. Mary Bodine was born in 1802 which after this other Lewis Bodine and Mary Burne married. And the children I have listed for Lewis Bodine and Mary Burne do not match the names of the children found in Lewis I. Bodine's will. Here are the children's names I have listed for him and Mary Burne:

Note: There is an Adam Bodine, born 1804, who married Anna Eliza Crist in 1826 in Montgomery, New York. That might very well be this Adam, but it's only a guess. There is also an Adam J. Bodine in the 1880 Census of Montgomery, NY. He could be this Adam. He is a carman, widowed, age 77, and born in NY. Both his parents were also born in NY. In his household is his daughter, Sarah A. Bodine. She is 49 and single. She was born in NY as well as both of their parents.

I would like to contribute. I am a gr gr gr grand-son of Lewis I. Bodine via his 2nd wife Mary Blake and their daughter Sally 'Sarah' Ann Bodine. I have Sarah's Bible given to her by Mary Blake. In the records section is the Lewis I Bodine marriage to Mary Blake on April 10, 1810.
I would like to send you a scanned jpg of it. It is also on file at the Orange Co., NY Gen. Soc. library in Goshen.
I would like to continue a dialogue with you about the Bodine family. I agree with about the William Bodine and son Jacob (father of my Lewis I. ) as supposed status.

The information below comes from the 1820 Census of Montgomery, Orange Co., NY. I think it refers to this Lewis Bodine. It seems to match up pretty well with the info I have on him; although, at least one other family must have been living with them at the time. It is on the same page as that of Charles Bodine (probably Lewis's brother). Here it is:

Note: This Elizabeth Crans (Crantz/Cranse) seems to be an important part of their family. I think she may have been a Bodine or Mary Blake's sister. She is provided for in Lewis's will and she seems to have been living with them before 1850. Lewis did have a sister named Elizabeth, but I don't have much info on her. I have that she was born in 1761, but that would not match this Elizabeth Crans who was born about 1786 (since she was 64 in 1850). There could be an error in the birth date I have for her or her age in the census (typo?, bad reading?).
"New England Families Genealogical and Memorial lists a father for a Lewis Bodine (must be this one) as Jacob Bodine. His will was made April 7, 1830 (see Orange Co. NY Wills, Book I, p. 124). He mentions wife Mary, sons Milton and Charles Fenner, daughters Mary wife of Samuel Sears, Rachel, Elizabeth, Elsey Ann, Susan, Fanny, and Sally. He also mentions Benjamin Bodine and Elizabeth Crants - woman in family.

In the name of God amen, I Lewis I. Bodine, of the town of Montgomery, county of Orange and the state of New York being of a sound and disposing mind and memory but weak in body, Do make ordain and declare this to be my last will and testament - viz - -
1st I do hereby constitute and appoint my beloved wife Mary Bodine my son Milton Bodine and my friend Cornelius Neafie of the town and county aforesaid the executors of this my last will
2nd I do hereby authorize and request the above named my executors a soon as convenient after my death, to sell a lot of land containing about two hundred acres and thirty acres (which said land I purchased from Elijah C. Horton) in the lot No. 7 of the first division of the Minisink Patent in the county of Sullivan, and do authorize them to give a good and sufficient deed or deeds for the same to the purchaser or purchasers thereof and they, my executors to take the avails thereof and pay all my just debts and funeral charges with the same and the balance if any there is to be disposed of as hereafter will be made known.
3rd I give and bequeath to unto my beloved wife Mary Bodine all the property she brought with her, or what she recd. from her fathers estate or the same quantity in as good condition.
4th I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Cranz [Crantz] a sufficient support or home as long as she may choose to occupy it in the family that I shall leave or as long as they may stay together.
5th I give and bequeath unto my wife Mary Bodine and my son Milton Bodine jointly or as long as she my said wife remains my widow and after that to my son Milton Bodine singly all the residue of my estate until my youngest child shall arrive at the full age of twenty one years for the purpose of raising, supporting, clothing, and schooling, all my children.
6th I give and bequeath unto my son Milton Bodine his heirs executors, administrators and assigns forever after my youngest child becomes of the full age of twenty one years all that part of my farm on which I now reside or which I inherited from my father known as part of the Galatian Patent containing about ninety acres on conditions of paying out of the legacies or a part thereof that shall hereafter be named.
7th I give and bequeath unto my son Charles Fenner Bodine and his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever after my youngest child becomes of the full age of twenty one years al that part of my farm commonly known as a part of the Gatehouse patent which I purchased from Benjamin Bodine containing about thirty- eight acres on conditions of paying out of the legacies or a part thereof that shall hereafter be named.
8th The conditions referred to in the sixth and seventh clauses of this my will is this viz. That within six months after my youngest child shall become of the age of twenty one years that my two sons, viz. Milton Bodine and Charles Fenner Bodine pay unto my daughter Mary, wife of Samuel Sears as her legacy one hundred dollars and to each of my other daughters, viz. Rachel Bodine, Elizabeth Bodine, Elsey, Ann Bodine, Susan Bodine, Fanny Bodine Sally Bodine or as many of them as may be living one hundred and fifty dollars each as their legacy, provided they should be married or leave the farm but in case they or any one of them should not be married and choose to remain and have their homes on the place they are to be supported on the farm and are not to demand interest for their said legacies; and that in the apportioning the amount to be paid by each of my two sons Milton Bodine and Charles Fenner Bodine of the above legacies, that reference is to be had to the exact amount of acres of land that is given to them respectively by this my last will-
