Notes for: James Madison Lafayette Bodine

The CTC Newsletter of December 1980 said that he does not appear in the Census records, but should fit into this family here.

He does not appear to be mentioned in the 1860 Census of Austin, Mower Co., MN

Dave,

James M Bodine & James Madison Lafayette Bodine can be connected by using the 1865 Minnesota State census, which may be accessed via Ancestry.com.

Jim

[Some notes from Dave Bodine on Ronny's notes below: The following notes, I think, are who the 1875 Census says how each person is related to each other (which is probably not correct). Simon (aka Samuel) is said to be James Madison Lafayette Bodine's uncle and Mark is said to be James's brother. Mark and James are living with their uncle Simon in 1875.

And another note is that James M. Bodine mentioned further below is James Madison Lafayette Bodine's father. The "James" mentioned is James Madison Lafayette Bodine.]

From Ronny Bodine (August 24, 2917):

1875 Freeborn Co., MN: Samuel BODIEN [sic] 26 IL, Mary 20 WI, James 0 MN, Mark 19 IN, James M. 17 IN.

This census was intended to represent the "Name of every person whose residence was in this family on the 1st of May, 1875." Taken over a period of several months, the forgoing entry was recorded in or after September 1875 and represents Simon (aka Samuel) Augustus Bodine (1849-1925), his wife Mary Dunning Bodine, and their first child, James Monroe, who was not born until 12 Sept. and should not have been included in this census. There can be no confusion with another Samuel Bodine as the census also notes the places of birth for the parents and those for Samuel are Kentucky and Illinois, which are indeed the birth places of his parents. Mark, 19 and James M., 17, both born in Indiana, and both reflecting the same birth places for their parents, KY and IL, as Samuel, can be none other than his younger siblings. Thus Mark was born in 1856 and James in 1858. Whereas Mark is seen in the 1860 Minnesota Federal census as aged 7, James is not. James first appears in the June 1865 Minnesota state census which did not require ages to be recorded. One must therefore accept that James was not born until after June 1860, the effective date of the Federal census. Yet, even this date presents a conflict with a sister who was born in April 1860. And if his birth is shifted another year to 1861, then it conflicts with his sister Lucy who was born in March 1861. It is always possible he was inadvertantly omitted in 1860. Therefore, his birth date in 1858 will be used until such a time as the births during this time period can be better reconciled.

By June 1880, James M. Bodine had moved to Rooks County, Kansas as did his son Simon. But the whereabouts of James, who did not move with them, is still unknown for this census. James made his way to Sanborn County, South Dakota where he married and died less than three years later. He was buried there in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Artesian.

1900 Tabor, Bon Homme Co., SD: Minnia BODINE, born July 1872 in Minnesota, widow, is a lodger living with Ernest Bousker, a priest. The South Dakota State Census of 1905 recorded Mary Bodine, age 33, widow and her son Mark, age 14. In April 1910, Mary Bodine was employed as a housekeeper in the home of E. A. Bouska, a Bohemian preacher in Tabor, Bon Homme County, South Dakota. She was a widow and reported having borne 2 children of whom her son Mark, age 19, was living with her. In April 1940, she was still engaged as a housekeeper for Mr. Bouska. Likely Mr. Bouska died and Mary moved to live near her son Mark in Auburn, King County, Washington where she was living as noted in Mark's newspaper obituary in December 1959. Mary died three months later.
