Notes for: Theophilus Bodine

Information at www.FamilySearch.org (LDS) listed a Theophilus (Theopolis) Bodine who was born in Hunterdon County on March 17, 1807 and whose parents were Garret Bodine and Lucy Cook Bodine. It also listed a Theophelus Bodine born on March 15, 1807 of Zanesville, Ohio whose parents were Garrett and Lucy Cook. This would be the same person. These records also say that he was in Clearfiled, Pennsylvania. It seems he worked his way west until he got to Zanesville, Ohio. I wonder if he is buried there.

He is most likely a brother of William Bodine based on their closeness to each other in the 1860 Census of Warren County, New Jersey. See William (BK #15902). They might well also be related to Theodore Bodine (BK# 17166) since William named a son Theodore and William and Theodore are close to each other in the 1840 Census of Warren County. Both are located in Mansfield Township.

The LDS info also says that he is a relative of Mary Adelaide LAWSON PERKINS.

There is a Theophilus Bodine who died in Hunterdon County a little before July 18, 1876. This is mentioned in the Hunterdon County Democrat of July 18, 1876 (v. 38, no. 43, p. 1972):

Theophilus Bodine, a native of Alexandria township, this county, committed suicide at Phillipsburg one day last week, by taking arsenic. Mr. Bodine was about 65 years old. He leaves several children.

I'm not sure if this is the same Theophilus Bodine as the one here who was born in 1807, but it is probably very likely.

The Warren County, NJ Marriage Index (v. 1, p. 26) lists a Heophilus(?) Berdine and a Mary Kirkhuff as having married in 1828. That is probably a misspelling and should be Theophilus. If this is true, then his wife's maiden name may be Kirkhuff.

From Ronny Bodine:

Warren County Marriage Records: Theophilus Berdine was married to Mary Kerkhuff on the 15th day of Nov. 1828.

Hunterdon County Democrat of July 18, 1876 (v. 38, no. 43, p. 1972): Theophilus Bodine, a native of Alexandria township, this county, committed suicide at Phillipsburg one day last week, by taking arsenic. Mr. Bodine was about 65 years old. He leaves several children.

The Evening Journal (Jersey City, N.J.) of Wed., 12 July 1876.
Theophilus Bodine, of Phillipsburg, committed suicide by poisoning, on Sunday. Poverty was the cause.

Warren County Death Records record two entries for the death of Mary Bodine, 3 days apart. Phillipsburg is located within Lopatcong Township. Since the marriage record records her name as Kerkhuff, the earlier record of 5 May seems to be the closest phonetic match.
Mary Bodine, daughter of Christopher and Catherine Carcuff, died 5 May 1875 in Lopatcong, Warren County, aged 73. She was married and born in New Jersey.
Mary Bodine, daughter of Christopher and Caroline Cascraft, died 8 May 1875 in Phillipsburg, Warren County, aged 73. She was married and born in Knowlton, New Jersey.
