Notes for: Mary (Maria) Christman

In E. P. Bodine's book, two of their children had the middle name "Christman." It's just a guess that this was Charles' wife's maiden name. Later, I found a Charles Bodine, husband of Maria Christman, buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Hughesville, Lycoming Co., PA. They must be this family. I think the "History of McHenry Co., IL" may say that she was born on March 28, 1812. Jim Hicks sent me the picture below of Maria Christman:

Maria (Christman) Bodine

I did have a death date of November 30, 1840 for Maria, but Jim Hicks wrote me about this pointing out the fact that some of her children were born after 1840. It seems that the info on her death date is incorrect. It came from her tombstone reading in Lycoming County Cemetery Series, v. 9, p. 12. This should be checked again along with her tombstone, if it is still readable. If her tombstone does say 1840, then there is some mistake here.

I think we corresponded a few months ago regarding Maria Christman Bodine. I noticed that your database shows Maria Christman Bodine's death date as Nov 30, 1840. While I am not sure of her correct death date, I think she was alive sometime after that. I have a picture of her, which I think I sent to you, with her daughter Mary, who was born in 1847. The picture probably dates from 1860-65. Also, her other children in your database were born after 1840.

Might be a glitch in your data. Thought you might want to know. If you do have conclusive evidence she died in 1840 please let me know.

Subject: Updated Information on Maria Christman Bodine

Hi, Dave:

You have some discussion on your web site about the death date of Maria (Christman) Bodine. She actually died in 1880, not 1840. Go to my web site listing of the grave markers at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Hughesville, PA. A lot of the Bodines are there, including Maria. There is a photo of her grave marker linked to her name.

If you want to link my page somewhere on your site, please feel free to do so. It is part of a comprehensive historical page about Sullivan County, PA, on which I include a lot of information and cemetery listings from towns in nearby counties as well.

Here is the cemetery page:

The following comes from the Muncy Luminary of July 30, 1851:

Mrs. Mary, widow of the late Casper CHRISTMAN, of Bloomsburg, died at Hughesville, at the house of her daughter, Mrs. Marie BODINE, on Saturday last, aged about 70 years. Mrs. C. came up to Hughesville in the month of April last, to bury her son-in-law, the extensively lamented BODINE. She suffered some 6 or 7 weeks from paralysis on her right side.
