Notes for: Joel Alfred Bodine
There is a good article about J. Alfred Bodine on pages 302-303 of Biographical History of the First Congressional District of New Jersey, v. 2. He eventually became president of the Bodine Glass Company, manufacturers of "glass cans" at Williamstown, New Jersey. He was also a director of the First National Bank of Glassboro. He was a leading member of the Tabernacle Methodist Episcopal Church of Camden, New Jersey.
It looks like he was living with his brother, John, at the time of the 1850 Census.

Recorded April 1, 1859 in the Clerk's office of Burlington County in Book I, of Deeds, page 295."
He was connected to the Williamstown Glass Company in Camden, New Jersey, for many years.

The marriage of Joel Bodine and Miss Phoebe French was reported in the "New Jersey Mirror" of 20 July 1854. Joel Bodine was associated with his father and brothers in the Williamstown Glass Works, 1846-1866; served as Town Clerk of Williamstown, 1866-1867, Collector 1867, and Freeholder, 1873-1875. He moved to Camden in 1879 where, in 1880, he was engaged in farming. He corresponded with Mary Elizabeth Sinnott in 1892 and furnished family information. On 24 Jan 1899, the Boise "Idaho Daily Statesman" reported "Millville, N.J., Jan. 23.---J. Alfred Bodine, president of the Bodine Glass Company, dropped dead in the office of his factory this afternoon. His death is believed to have been due to excitement over the threatened strike of over 3000 glassblowers and 8000 other employees tomorrow at this place, Bridgeton, Glassboro, Salem, Williamstown and other points." Phebe (French) Bodine was the daughter of Francis and Ann (Mathis) French. In 1900, Phebe Bodine, now widowed, was living in Camden and engaged as a landlady.

The newspaper article in the “NJ Mirror” of 20 July 1854 reads “At the Parsonage, in Tuckerton, on the 3rd inst., by Rev. A. Gearhart, Mr. Joel A. Bodine of Williamstown, Camden county, to Miss Phebe J. French, of Bass River, Burlington county.

BODINE.---On December 22, 1907 PHOEBE J., widow of J. Alfred Bodine, aged 72 years. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the funeral services, on Thursday, December 26, at 11. A.M. from her late residence 333 Vine st., Camden, N.J. Interment private at Harleigh Cemetery.
