Micajah Bates and his family was living 1860 (as Michael Bates) and 1870 (as Micajah Batts) in Camden, Camden County where he was engaged as a steamboat pilot. The Bates family was living 1880 in the home of Emeline's sister Elizabeth Alcott in Camden, Camden County. Micajah Bates was still employed as a pilot. At age 76, Emeline Bates was living June 1900 in the home of her daughter and son-in-law Laura and Samuel Stetzell in Camden. It was noted that she had borne 2 children, both then living.

BATES.---On October 6, 1901, Emeline Bates, widow of the late Micajah Bates. Funeral services on Wednesday, October 9, at 2 o'clock, at 446 Benson street, Camden, N.J. Interment at Evergreen Cemetery.
