Notes for: Ann (Anna) Bodine
The only Jacob Saltar/Salter I can find who might match this Jacob Saltar (who comes from the Sinnott book) is found in "The Salter Family" on p. 10. This comes from something noted by Edwin Salter (a noted historian) in a pamphlet for a memorial service for Edwin's son, George William Salter (online at archives.org). The very end of the pamphlet says Edwin received a letter from a Col. I. S. Buckalew, of Jamesburg, N. J., dated March 15, 1882, that gave his Salter ancestry as noted below:
A Jacob Salter is mentioned as the son of "John Salter, born about 1735, was killed 'while loading a log' about 1775. Her married Epenetus, daughter of Thomas Gordon and Janet, daughter of David Mudie, see p. 47 Whitehead's East Jersey History. His children were:"
Thomas Salter
Jacob Salter
John Salter
Margaret Salter
Ann Salter
Catharine Salter
Epenetus Salter, a posthumous child.
Note that Jamesburg, NJ is very close to Vincent Bodine in Cranbury, NJ. And this Jacob Salter could be around the right age if his father was born in 1735 as it says below. But some genealogies put Jacob's birth date around 1782 which would not match. Note that the Salter family in this pamphlet is associated with the Bodine family. Edwin himself married a Bodine.
The information from this same pamphlet, p. 11, says that the Thomas Salter mentioned above had a daughter, Ann, who married Isaac G. Snedeker of Cranbury, NJ. Thomas had another daughter, Charity, who married Peter Stuits and they also lived near Cranbury. Edwin Salter, the author, could not connect this John Salter to any parents.
I see that the information above is more clearly presented in Historical and Genealogical Miscellany: Early Settlers of New Jersey and their Descandants, by John E. Stillwell, MD, v. IV (NY, 1916), pp. 208-209.
A family very likely connected to the above family is a John Salter, Sr. who married a Hannah Thorn. This John was born April 15, 1772 and could be the John mentioned above as a sibling of Jacob. This John Salter, Sr. had a grandson named Epenetus Salter. The name Epenetus really stands out.
There is also a Jacob Salter buried in the Frenchtown Cemetery in Hunterdon County, NJ. He was born in 1802. Checking those Salters, I don't think they are the right ones.
I'm beginning to think Jacob and Ann Salter may have moved off to Ohio, or Illinois but that is just a hunch based on some Salters I'm seeing out there. Nothing solid yet.
From Ronny Bodine:
The baptism of Anna, daughter of Vincent Bodine of Cranbury, on 11 June 1764 was recorded in the register of Christ Church, Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Jacob Saltar is called the husband of Ann Bodine in Sinnott's "Annals..." p. 167.
