Notes for: Tunis Burdine / Bodine
Sinnott says he moved, in 1816, to what is now Ocean County, New Jersey. He located at Mannahawkin along with his brother James, and entered into the mercantile business. Birthday is probably September 24, 1791. This came from Ryan Levering's pages at www.familytreemaker.com. I originally just had Amelia as his wife, but I found another wife, Ann, for him buried in the Old Manahawkin Cemetery in Ocean County. She died in 1829 meaning his other children must have been born by Amelia.

TUNIS, born 29 Sept 1791, bapt. 6 Nov 1791, parents James & Elizabeth Burdine.
On 13 Sept 1814, Tunis Bodine enlisted as a Drummer in Captain John Barnes's Company, New York Militia (Blwt 53808-40-50 and 65887-120-55). For this military service he began drawing a pension in 1872 (Certificate no. 11306).

p.77. "Of the sons of James Bodine, two came to what is now Ocean county in 1816, namely, Tunis and James. They originally located at Manahawkin, and entered into the mercantile business ; beside which they started a stage line, probably the first, from the ferry below the village to Mount Holly ; James soon sold out and left, and embarked on a ship, and subsequently died of cholera."

Deed of 14 Feb 1826 from Tunis Bodine and Ann, his wife, of Stafford to David L. Haywood of the same place, for $200, one equal sixth part in the Township of Stafford where John Haywood now lives being 40 acres and a second lot, known as Lot 2, of 18 acres in Manahawkin Great Meadows, being lands Ann Bodine became seized of at the death of her father John Haywood, Esq. (Recorded 20 Feb 1826 in Deed Book, L2, p. 42)
Nancy (Haywood) Bodine appears to have died in or as a result of childbirth and was buried in Manahawkin Baptist Churchyard, now in Ocean County, New Jersey.

On 22 Feb 1809 to Amelia Woodmansee was married to Thomas Chadwick, both of Dover Township, by Benjamin Laurence.

Tunis Bodine and Amelia Chadwick were married 22 May 1841.

Deed of 12 Feb 1845 from Tunis Bodine and Amelia, his wife, of Stafford Township to Richard Cox, of the same place, for $335, 8 acres in the Village of Barnegat. [Recorded 29 June 1847 in Deed Book C5, p. 213]
Union Township was incorporated 10 March 1846 from portions of Stafford Township and Dover Township while still part of Monmouth County. Ocean County was formed 15 Feb 1850 from portions of Monmouth County,

There is no evidence that Tunis Bodine had married between the death of his wife Nancy in 1829 and his marriage to Amelia in 1841. This is supported by a series of deeds from soon after the death of Nancy up to 22 March 1841, in all cases he transacted business alone. Further, as Ann is called his first wife and Amelia his second wife on their joint grave markers it would appear that the children Margaret and Abraham were born to Amelia during her previous marriage to Thomas Chadwick.
In the will of his brother, John Bodine, of 24 Oct 1857, he was named as a resident of Barnegat, Ocean County, New Jersey.

The New York Herald of 24 April 1861 included a notice that " The schooner Tunis Bodine , Captain Tuttle, arrived here yesterday, from Norfolk.."
1870 Union Twp., Ocean Co., NJ: Tunis BODINE 78 NY, Amelia 76 NJ.
1880 Union Twp., Ocean Co., NJ: Tunis BODINE 88 "single" retired.

Tunis Bodine, widowed, merchant, died 12 Dec 1880 aged 89 years in Union Township, Ocean County.

DIED. BODINE.--After a lingering illness, on Sabbath evening, December 12, 1880, Tunis Bodine, in the 90th years of his age. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from his late residence, Barnegat, N.J., on Friday afternoon, at one o'clock.

Tunis Bodine died at Barnegat, on Dec. 12. He was born on Staten Island, Sept. 29, 1791, and was therefore in his 90th year. He was one of the brave men who served in the war of 1812. For the past sixty-four years he had been a resident of Ocean County.
His will of 30 May 1875, wherein he calls himself a resident of Barnegat, Union Township, was proved 22 Jan 1881 and therein he names daughters Elizabeth Predmore, wife of Wright Predmore and Sarah H. Sexton; the children of his deceased son James: Annie H., Edgar, Lefly, Ellie and Ashton; and his niece, Margaret Salter (Ocean County Wills 2: 207).
