Notes for: Rachel Bodine

She was unmarried as of January, 1778. I saw a message posted at the Bodine Forum by an Ann Langdon who was searching for information on a Rachel Bodine who was born June 1748 and died in 1783. She was married about 1765 to Egbert Braisted at St. Andrew's Church in Richmond County. I wondered if that wasn't the Rachel given here. I later heard from Dr. Edward Rockstein (ed4linda at home.com) that it is believed that this Rachel did indeed marry Egbert Braisted. No original source material was available to prove this, but that will hopefully be forthcoming.

I believe this Rachel Bodine also appears as a witness on the will of John Vanderbilt, Sr. dated September 8, 1776 in Richmond County. Tunis Egberts is also a witness (Book 31, p. 25).

Dr. Rockstein later sent the following message:

Subject: Re: Rachel Bodine 1748?abt 1750?& Egbert Braisted?
Date: Tue, 01 May 2001
From: "Dr. Edward D. Rockstein" (ed4linda at home.com)

David, FYI, J.J. Clute, Annals of Staten Island, p. 347 states in a paragraph on the Braisted family, "Johannes, of John, son of William, married Trintje Haughwout, and had a son Jan, or John, bap. Aug 18, 1741, and a son, Peter, bap. Aug 15, 1743. We then lose trace of the family for 30 years; then it appears again in the name of Egbert and Rachel his wife, who had a son Egbert, born May 6, 1773." While a secondary source and while not providing Rachel with a surname, Bodine, or otherwise, it is another small bit of evidence to throw onto the balance.

Here is another message from Ed concerning this:

Subject: Rachel Bodine wife of Egbert Braisted

Dave, Staten Island Wills and Letters of Administration: Richmond County New York, 1670-1800 . . . by Charlotte Meghill Hicks © 1993 Heritage Books, on page 17 (John Bodine's will is on p. 16) has the following:

"In the name of God, Amen. I, RACHEL BRAISTED, of the County of Richmond (spinster), being sick and weak. I leave to my son, John Braisted, "a silver clasps [sic] and sleve buttens", and five dollars. Unto my daughter (Catherine) Caterine, a gold ring and a silver spoon. Unto my son EGBERT, a pair of silver shoe buckles. All my real and personal to be sold by my friend, ANTHONY EGBERTS, whom I appoint executor. All my children, JOHN, CATHERINE, and EGBERT to share equally, after my just debts and funeral charges be paid. Should any child die under age and leave no issue, then the share of the one so dying is to be equally divided amongst the survivors, when they come of age.

(Signed) RACHEL BRESTED

Dated October 31, 1778

Witnesses; JOHN BODINE, William Smith, farmers; DARCUS BODINE.

Proved January 7, 1783.
Liber 35:177
WNYHS XII: 14

The witnesses certainly up the validity on my identification of Rachel Braisted as Rachel Bodine 1748-1783 m 1765 in St, Andrews Church, Richmond, eh? What do you think?

From Ronny Bodine:

Rachel Bodine witnessed the will of John Vanderbilt, Sr. of Richmond County on 8 Sept 1776 (New York Wills, 31: 25-27). She was unmarried in Jan 1778.
