Notes for: Franklin ("Frank") Pierce Bodine

RB said that Franklin's death was registered by the state of Arkansas as occuring on 22 July 1923 and so is at odds by one day with the newspaper obit of almost 30 years later (see further below). The death record is assumed to be more accurate.

Franklin Bodine did not register for the WW1 draft since he was too old.

FamilySearch.com has his birth year as "about 1861." I've also seen 1865, but he is 13 years old in the 1880 Census of Jefferson Co., IL. The 1900 Census of Farrington Twp., Jefferson Co., IL may give his birth year as March 1861.

From Ronny Bodine:

Franklin Bodine was aged 5 in July 1870 and 13 in June 1880. In June 1900 he gave his birthdate as March 1861. But, in his marriage license, issued 8 July 1889, he stated he was aged 25 at his next birthday. Perhaps March 1865 is correct. Dicy was the daughter of Phillip and A. (Wells) Osborn. The family was living 1900 in Farrington Township, Jefferson County where Franklin engaged in farming. In 1900, Dicey stated she had borne 5 children of who 3 were then living. In 1910, the family was living in Odin Township, Marion County, where Frank was engaged as a grocery merchant. Dicey now stated she had borne 9 children of who 7 were then living. On 5 Sept 1918, William Bodine registered for the World War I draft in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas and noted his closest relative was Mrs. Dicey Bodine, residing on First Street, in Mena.

Obituary, The Register News (Mount Vernon, Ill.) of 12 Dec 1952.
Mrs. Dicey Gray died at 12:15 a. m. today at her home in McClellan township, at the age of 78 years, three months and 11 days. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p. m. at Myers Chapel, with the Rev. Marsh Harpole officiating, and burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery. The body will remain at Myers Chapel, where friends may call after 10 a. m. Saturday. Mrs. Gray was born August 31, 1874 in Jefferson county, the daughter of Phillip and Biggie Ann (Wells) Osborn. She was first married to Frank Bodlne, who preceded her in death July 23, 1923. She was later married to Robert Gray, who survives. Mrs. Gray had been a member of the Missionary Baptist church since she was 15 years of age. Besides her husband, she is survived by four sons, Steve Bodine of Woodlawn, George Bodine of Mt. Vernon, William Bodine of Baton Rouge, La. and John Bodine of Griffinville, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. May Barnhill and Mrs. Ruth Cassady of Mt. Vernon;: a halfbrother Arley Kash of Mt. Vernon; 30 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Dear Lonnie and Dave-- For Arlie Cash to have been Franklin Bodine's stepbrother would mean Arlie and Franklin did not share a parent or they would have been half-siblings. That would mean since Franklin was the child of James Bodine's 2nd wife Nancy Dale, then Arlie Cash would have been the product of James's first wife by a previous marriage and considering that Arlie was born in Feb 1883, that is not a liklihood. Also, Franklin was born in IL of parents born in TN and Arlie was born in IL or parents born in IL. If Arlie was the step-brother of Dicey then he would have to be the child of Dicey's father's 2nd wife by her previous marriage, if there was such a thing.

I find Dicey, age 6, living 1880 with her maternal uncle, Stephen Wells, in Jefferson County, IL. Since this all seems to fall between the 1880 and 1900 census and involves the Osborn/Osborne family for whom I have no resources I am afraid there is nothing more I can add aside from the foregoing supposition.

Sorry I could not be of more help.
