As of June 6, 1900, he was a farmer.

Moira H. was told by her great-aunt Hazel, the daughter of James Delphus Bodine, that he made a living by farming and selling Singer sewing machines. Moira has a picture of him. She later sent this to me. See below.

James Delphus Bodine - to the left

Here's a picture from Moira of James on his sixtieth birthday, in Oklahoma.

James Delphus Bodine

And here are four generations of the women in the family. From left to right: Great-grandmother Flock (Minnie's grandmother); grandmother Rhea (James Bodine's mother-in-law); Juanita (Bodine) Boatman (James and Minnie's daughter); and Margaret Boatman (Juanita's daughter). Hazel Bodine said that great-grandmother Flock was 101 at the time of this picture. She also said that Minnie was the one who took the picture. The picture was taken around 1924 or so. Minnie was around 43 and her mother was in her late 70's.

Four Generations

The picture above was taken in 1912 in Morganville, Kansas at the home of George Ira Bodine. From the information that Moira H. sent me on this picture, I believe the people in this picture are the following - L to R: James Delphus Bodine, Hazel Bodine (James' daughter), LeRoy Allen Bodine (George's son), Minnie Alice Bodine (James' wife), Ruth A. Bodine (George's daughter), Annie Rebeccah Bodine (George's wife), George Wesley Bodine (George's son), and George Ira Bodine.

JAMES D. BODINE
Alva: Funeral will be Saturday at 2: 30 p.m. in the Evangelical United Brethren Church for JAMES D. BODINE, 74, who died here Thursday. Bodine came to Oklahoma with his parents and settled on a claim near Enid. He moved his family to Alva in 1916. He is survived by his wife, one son, Major GEORGE BODINE of Camp Carson, Colorado; two daughters, Mrs. HAZEL MCGINTY of Waco and Mrs. EHTEL GOOD of Geary; a sister Mrs. GENNIE COBB of Long Beach, California, and a brother MAURICE BODINE of Wichita.

From Ronny Bodine:

1st marriage--1899--MINNIE ALICE REA.
From his Ohio birth record: Jas. D. Bodine, son of Wesley Bodine and Arabell A. Buell, born 22 May 1873 in Northwest Township, Williams County, Ohio. In June 1900, James Bodine lived in Kremlin Township, Garfield County, Oklahoma with his wife Minnie to whom he was married less than one year. Their household included his widowed father Wesley and his siblings Jennie 19 and Morris 31. In Jan 1910, the family lived in Enid, Garfield County where James worked as salesman for a medicine company. He reported that in 10 years of marriage his wife had borne 4 children, but only 3 were then living. His family included his wife Minnie A. 27, and children Juanita 9, George O. 7 and Hazel 4.

From Garfield County, Oklahoma Territory Marriage Records:
James D. Bodine, 25, of North Enid, native of Ohio AND Minnie A. Ray, 19, of North Enid obtained a marriage license on 7 Oct 1899, but there was no marriage return.

James D. and Minnie A. Bodine are listed as residents in the 1915 Enid (OK) City Directory. In Sept 1918, when he registered for the World War I Draft, James Bodine named as his next of kin, not his wife, but his daughter Juanita. It seems evident the couple divorced. When daughter Hazel Eileen Bodine applied for a SSN she named her parents James D. Bodine and Minnie A. Reiser. Social Security Records show Minnie Reiser, daughter of Elex & Margaret (Flock) Ray, as born 6 Oct 1883 in Kansas and died 9 March 1963 in Los Angeles County, Calif. The 1885 Kansas State Census lists Minnie A. Rea, age 2 KS, living with her parents E.A. & Maggie Rea in Haddam Township, Washington County. Mrs. Minnie A. Reiser is listed in the 1959 and 1961 Long Beach, California City Directories.

2nd marriage--1918--JESSIE A. KENDRICK.
From Woods County, Oklahoma Marriage Records:
James D. Bodine, 45, born in Ohio AND Mrs. Jessie A. Stowe, 42, born in Illinois, both of Alva, Oklahoma, were married 26 Sept 1918 at Alva, by E. P. Freeman, Minister, United Brethren, of Alva. [Note: On 27 April 1898 in McPherson Co., Kansas, Jessie A. Kendrick married Clarence Vernon Stowe with whom she was living 1900 in Hutchison, Reno Co., Kansas and who died in 1915.]

On 12 Sept 1918, James Delpheus Bodine registered for the World War 1 draft in Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma. He reported he was born 22 May 1873, worked as a salesman for the Singer Sewing Machine Company and Juanita Bodine of El Reno, Oklahoma was his nearest kin. In Jan 1920, James Bodine lived with his family in Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma and in April 1930, James and Jessie Bodine lived alone in Alva.

From Oklahoma Death Records:
James D. Bodine died 25 Sept 1947 in Woods County.
Jessie K. Bodine died 16 Sept 1961 in Tulsa County.

Hi Dave... I checked on Hazel and can add the following now: Hazel E. McGinty, born 21 March 1906, died 6 March 2005 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. According to his [James D. Bodine] obituary he had another daughter, Ethel Good of Geary who survived him. What do you know of her? I did not see her in any census.

Best regards,

Ronny
