Obituary, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (Ontario, CA) of 6 Aug 2023.
Mary Jenette Warlick, a longtime resident of Claremont, CA, passed away on July 11, 2023, at the age of 101. Jenette to the very end, always had a sparkle in her eyes, was quick to smile and exhibited a zest for life, so we thought she might outlive us all. Born May 22, 1922, to Frank and Elizabeth Bodine , she was one of 18 talented and rambunctious children who grew up on a family farm in North Dakota. Although neither parent had more than an eighth-grade education, all the children went to college to fulfill their parents' wishes to give their children a stronger start in life. Her mother, Elizabeth Bodine , a German immigrant, was named the National Mother of the Year in 1968 and was granted the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award in 1979. Jenette spent her early years helping to care for her siblings, as well as mastering the flute, and was an outstanding student and track star in high school despite the demands of farm life. She received numerous partial college scholarships, but ultimately sold her flute and helped worked herself through nursing school, receiving her RN through St. Joseph Hospital in Minot, N. Dakota. One of her proudest accomplishments was utilizing her nursing skills by enlisting in the Army during WWII. This is where she met her future husband Wesley Warlick, nursing him back to health at a military hospital in Pasadena, as he recovered from grievous wounds he received as part of George Patton's Third Army during the Battle of the Bulge. Exhibiting true love and an independent spirit, Jenette broke army regulations by sneaking out at night in order to see Wesley, an enlisted Staff Sergeant, as she held the rank of First Lieutenant. Her children greatly thank her for this act of rebellion.Jenette devoted most of her life to raising her six children, one of whom was disabled. She also periodically worked as a nurse, taught Sunday school, and loved playing bridge, golf, oil painting, gardening, visiting with her local backyard birds, attending Angel's baseball games, reading her daily newspaper, science magazines and fiction novels, and occasionally wrestling with one-armed bandits at her favorite casinos. She enjoyed many trips with her beloved husband Wesley both overseas and domestically, and treasured extended visits with her parents and siblings, whom she considered her closest friends. She cherished family gatherings and was thrilled to celebrate her 100th birthday party with family and friends at an Angel's baseball game, where she was featured on the big board and her 101st at a casino where she joyously won a couple jackpots.A champion of the underdog, Jenette dedicated her later years after her husband's passing, caring for her disabled son until his death this past December. Remarkably, she still managed her own home and her son's care at age 100. She amazed people with her vitality and youth and could easily pass for someone 20-25 years younger than her, although she loved to tell people her age in these past few years to astonish them. She had a lifelong sense of humor and enjoyed social gatherings with family and friends. Jenette loved a full house and never turned away family members in need of a home, hosting many of her siblings to assist them when first starting out. Her parents, siblings, husband, children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and pet companions meant the world to her. Jenette was consistently kind and saw the good in people, following the teachings of her strong Catholic faith. She attributed her long life and resiliency to daily prayer and a close relationship with God and the Lord. As her brother Ron succinctly stated, Jenette is now at God's table, although we here on earth love and miss her tremendously. Most certainly, she was a model member of the Greatest Generation, and her spirit is irreplaceable.Jenette is survived by her four children: Michael (Amy) Warlick, San Diego, CA, Maureen Cronin (Paul Thomasian), Claremont, CA, Thomas (Nadja) Warlick, Ganserndorf, Austria, Gregory (Suzannah) Warlick, Santa Clarita, CA; eight grandchildren: Kendra Yates, Colorado Springs, CO, Rebecca (Sam) Cooke, Brooklyn, NY, John Warlick, Los Angeles CA, Bernhard Warlick, Ganserndorf, Austria, Wolfgang Warlick, Ganserndorf, Austria, Alana Matt Warlick, Olympia, WA, Juliet Warlick, Santa Clarita, CA, and Jason Warlick, Santa Clarita ,CA; six brothers John (Betty, deceased) Bodine , Barnesville, MN, Mark Bodine , Buffalo, WY, Ronald (Carol) Bodine , Bismark, ND, Jerry (Peggy) Bodine , Hazen, ND, Dale (Sandy) Bodine , Grand Forks, ND and Bill Bodine , Velva, ND; two sisters: Monica (Floyd, deceased) Goetze, Eugene, OR and Audrey (Tom, deceased) McLaughlin, Thousand Oaks, CA; two brothers-in-law, Pat Effertz, Velva, ND, Bob Bernards, St. Paul, MN; one sister-in-law, Barbara Bodine , Voltaire, ND, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
