Based on the 1870 Census info below, I am guessing that John and Margaret Potter are Charles's parents but that needs confirmation.

1870 West Windsor Twp., Mercer Co., NJ: John POTTER 66 NJ farmer, Margaret S. 62 NJ, Charles 26 NJ farm laborer, Caroline 21 NJ, Mary 2 NJ.
1880 Lawrence Twp., Mercer Co., NJ: Charly POTTER 36 NJ laborer, Caroline 30 NJ wife, Mary 12 NJ dau, Peter 9 NJ son, Seppina 6 NJ dau, Maryeve 4 NJ dau, Author 2 NJ son.
From New Jersey Birth Records:
Male child born 13 April 1879 in Lawrence, Mercer County to Chas. Potter, 36 and ____ Bodine, 31.
From New Jersey Death Records:
Caroline N. Potter, 33, married, died 20 March 1881 in Trenton, Mercer County.
On 18 Dec 1884, Charles Potter married Sarah Elizabeth Snider in Herndon, Fairfax Co., Virginia, with whom he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
The 1941 State of Pennsylvania Certificate of Death of Emerson Potter, born 8 Dec 1870 in Trenton, NJ named his parents as Charles Potter, born in Trenton, NJ and Caroline Bodine, born in Cranbury, NJ. [Note: His full name was Peter Emerson Potter.]
