Notes for: John N. Bodine

I had his middle initial as "M" but that does not seem to have much support. There is more evidence that it was "N." Besides the info below, Cornelia's gravestone may say she was the wife of John N. Bodine.

There is a John N. Bodine who also married a Susan H. _________ about 1864 in Burlington, New Jersey. She was born in 1842 (info from FamilySearch.com).

There is a John N. Bodine in the 1880 Census of North Brunswick, Middlesex Co., NJ. He is a carpenter, age 43, born in NJ. Both of his parents were born in NJ, too. His wife is Lauretta, age 36, NJ, NJ, NJ. His son is John A. Bodine (10, NJ, NJ, NJ).

Obituary, The Daily Times (New Brunswick, NJ) of Thursday, 27 July 1899.
John N. Bodine, the well known carpenter and builder, who for over 30 years has been one of the most prominent residents of New Brunswick township, died last night of heart failure, in the 63d year of his age. His death will be a severe loss to the village of Franklin Park, of which he was a leading and valued resident. He was born near Cranbury 62 years ago on the 16th of last February. For over 32 years he has been established at Franklin Park, where he conducted an extensive business of carpentry and building. Mr. Bodine was taken ill last winter with an attack of the grip, from which he never fully recovered. It affected his heart and it was to heart disease that his death was directly due. He had been confined to his home only a week prior to his death. He was a Republican in politics and had been prominent in the affairs of the township. He represented it for several terms in the Board of Freeholders, he had also held a number of minor offices in the township, as well as the office of town committeeman. He was a man of utmost kindness of heart and the most unswerving honesty. In business and social relations, he earned the respect and admiration of all with whom he came in contact. He was for years a faithful member of the Reformed Church of Franklin Park, and prominent in all good works of the village. He was charitable, with an unassuming and modest charity that ever kept his right hand from knowing what his left hand did, and many in Franklin Park who had occasion to ___ him, will find, now that he is gone, what a good friend they have lost. He leaves a widow and one son, J. A. Bodine, who was his partner and assistant in business. Mr. Bodine's funeral will take place on Saturday morning, at 11 o'clock from his late residence, Franklin Park.

The will of John N. Bodine of North Brunswick Township, Middlesex County of 21 July 1893 named wife Lauretta B. Bodine and sons Garrett S. Bodine and John A. Bodine. His wife is named executor. Proved 7 Aug 1899. (Middlesex Co. Wills, R: 661)

Burials in Westminster Cemetery, Cranbury, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
