Notes for: Charles Bodine

Some of the information on this family comes from the 1850 censuses of New Jersey (roll 444, p. 299). They lived in Pemberton Township in Burlington County.

The birth place comes from the 1880 Census info from son Charles Bodine. Both his parents were born in New Jersey.

The marriage of Charles Bodine and Rebecca E. Croshaw, both of Pemberton, was reported in the Woodbury "Village Herald" of 28 Jan 1829. Charles Bodine served Burlington County in a variety of positions, as Clerk of New Hanover Township 1828, Constable of New Hanover Township 1841-1845 and when Pemberton Township was formed from New Hanover in March 1846 he continued there as Constable for 1846 and served on the Township Committee 1850-1852, 1858-1860 and 1864. Charles served in the Mexican War and was commissioned Paymaster on 7 April 1847. He applied for a Bount Land Warrant on 10 May 1852 which was approved under BLWT 23408-160-50. In 1870, Charles Bodine was living in Pemberton Borough with his daughter and son-in-law Fannie and William Beck, where Charles worked as a railroad clerk.

The will of Charles Bodine of Pemberton, dated 19 Jan 1878, was proved 7 Feb 1878. Therein, he named his children Helen F. Lippincott, wife of Andrew F. Lippincott; Mary E. Evans, wife of John H. Evans; and Fanny Beck, wife of William Beck; grandchildren Fred Evans, son of Mary Evans and Charles H. Bodine. The executor was his son-in-law, John H. Evans (Burlington Co. Wills, O: 319-321). Rebecca, daughter of William and Martha Croshaw, died of a liver disease according to the Burlington County Death Records. Charles and Rebecca Bodine were buried in Pemberton Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery. See the obituary of Rebecca Bodine in the "New Jersey Mirror" of 23 June 1869.
