Mrs. Jean M. McDowell, 68, of North Arlington died yesterday in the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark. A Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington, following the funeral from the Parow Funeral Home, 185 Ridge Rd., North Arlington. Mrs. McDowell was a member of the Blood Donors Association and the Ladies Auxiliary of Knights of Columbus Council 3428, both in North Arlington, and the Bergen County Women's Republican Club. Born in Jersey City, she lived in North Arlington for 50 years. Surviving are her husband, William D.; two sons, William D. Jr. and Matthew G.; three daughters, Mrs. Karen Doherty, Mrs. Laura Adduchio and Mrs. Mary Cappiello; a sister, Mrs. Lorraine Sales; a brother, John Bodine, and seven grandchildren.

William D. McDowell, 80, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Hackensack University Medical Center. Viewings have been scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Parow Funeral Home, 185 Ridge Rd., North Arlington. The funeral is at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 19, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Ridge Road, North Arlington. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Born in Newark, Mr. McDowell moved to North Arlington in 1952. A World War II Navy veteran and Seton Hall University graduate, Bill was elected to the North Arlington Borough Council and in 1964 went on to serve two terms as mayor. He served two terms as Bergen County sheriff, a post he held when he was elected as the first Bergen County executive. He also served as the executive director of the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission and director of The Board of Chosen Freeholders in Bergen County. Bill owned the McDowell and McEvoy Insurance Agency and continued working after retiring as a consultant for J. Fletcher Creamer & Son. Bill served on numerous boards, including Bergen Pines, Bergen Community College and Bright Side Manor Assisted Living. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW and Lions Club. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Jean Bodine, in 1998. He is survived by two sons, William Jr. and Matthew G;. three daughters, Karen Doherty and husband, Bob, Laura Adduchio, and Mary Cappiello and husband, Joe. He was the beloved Poppy of eight loving grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 20 Mercer St., Hackensack, and the Bright Side Manor Assisted-Living Center, 300 Teaneck Rd., Teaneck.
