Searching for any information on Isaac Bodine. Information passed down through family is; he was of French descent or may have been a French citizen. He fought in the civil war, was wounded then nursed back to health by Ada Ann (Stoops) Smith, who lived in Texas County, MO at that time. After the death of Ada's husband, Levi Smith (b. Tenn), Ada must have married Bodine. However, at her death in Aug. 1887 in Summersville, MO., her husband's name was shown as Isaac Bonine, stating that he was returning to Illinois where he had family.

I have more information on Ada Ann (Stoops) Smith but nothing more on Isaac Bodine/Bonine. Can anyone help? Tnanks

I too am a Bodine descendent. My family originated in France, came to New York, down thru NJ, Pennsylvania, and finally Loudoun County VA. There were family members that went to Jefferson Co IL, Jasper Co, MO, Sevier Co TN, and we are currently all over the US, including in GA, Texas, and FL. I am not sure about your Isaac, but James Bodine Jr., born 1772 in Loudoun Co VA and died between 1842 and 1850 in Jefferson Co IL is a pretty good place to start. They had large families and the names John, James, Francis, Isaac (or Isaiah) were used over and over. If you think this might be a connection for you, I'd be happy to provide you with more info. Good luck on your quest!

Judy: Thanks for the response and I would love any information you would share on any Isaac Bodine. Did you run across any Bodine who may have changed the name to Bonine? I believe Isaac may have changed his name before he married Ada (Stoops) Smith.

Hi Donna,
Was reading the post earlier tonight, looking to see if anyone knew of a Abraham Bodine b. 03 May 1817 (census varies bet. PA & NJ) & d. 03 November 1871 in Allegan, Mich. He m. Sarah ??. b. 14 Aug 1828 in England; (d) 13 Feb 1902 in Allegan. They lived in Lenawee Cty, MI, and later moved to Allegan. His death record gives his parents as Abraham & Sarah Bodine (?? seems weird his parents names same as theirs). Children of Abraham & Sarah: (1) Mary Jane b. 25 Mar 1849 in MI; (d) 04 Aug 1851 (2) Ellen F. b. 23 Mar 1853, MI (d) 03 Jun 1875 in Cheshire, Allegan Cty, MI (gg-grandmother) m. Robert Eugene Smith (she died giving birth to their 2nd child) (3) Alice b. 21 Mar 1855; (d) 17 Dec 1883 (4) Andrew J. b. 17 Sep 1856 (d) 24 Feb 1944; m. Mary Ann Hayes (5) George Henry b. 17 Feb 1861; (d) 03 Apr 1895 (6) William I. b. 18 Jan 1864 (d) May 1947 in Montana (before his death, no one had heard from him in 35 yrs) (6) John Bodine b. 25 Aug 1865.

Anyways the reason I'm writing is I came across a copy of obit in Cassopolis Vigilant (sorry didn't record date-plus a bad copy on microfilm - will do best to make it out)

ELIZABETH G. BONINE - wife of Isaac Bonine, Jr., died after a patient and long suffering illness at her husband's residence on Young's Prairie, Oct. 26th, 1878 (looks like a 5 but rest are all 8's), aged 44 years. Her father, Amos Green, came to Cass County, in 1831, and settled on the east side of Young's Prairie, where he died August 6th, 1854. She was one of a family of fifteen children, all of whom grew to man and womanhood except three. She was born in 1834 within sight of the place of her death; was an active member of the Quaker of Friend's church, and one of the founders of the Ladie's Home Missionary Society of Young's Prairie, as well as an earnest worker in temperance and other noble enterprises, to all which she freely lent a helping hand; until failing strength caused abandonment of all work.

Don't know if this fits in with your BONINE you were looking for, but just in case I had to send this to you. If either of you come across where you may think that Abraham Bodine fits into your Bodine's...please email me. Thanks!!! Hope this is a lead for you. Susan Gale - Rgale10657 at aol.com

Hi Judy, just wanted to make a correction on the data that I sent you. You listed McClennan Twp, Jeffeson Co Il, and it should be McClellan Twp, Jeffeson Co Il. Write when you can.

Searching for parents of Joseph Stoops. His children: Ada Ann, Mike, Jeff & John (no birth dates. Ada was born in Illinois in 1836. She married Levi Smith b. about 1836 in Illinois. Levi reportedly went away to civil war and never returned. Two children born to Levi and Ada: Ada Cordelia b. 3-22-1857 In Joplin, MO and William Jasper ("Wid") b. 10-17-1859. Ada (Stoops) Smith later married Isaac Bodine (or Bonine). Family reports the name as Bodine. Shannon County newspaper (Aug. 1887) obit on Ada states, "Mrs. Isaac Bonine". Also would like more info on Isaac Bonine. After Ada's death he returned to Illinois where he had living children. Some possibility that he was biological father of Ada Cordelia Smith (Bonine?).
