Notes for: James S. Bodine

At FamilySearch.com, his parents are listed as James Bodine and Sarah Twitty. At one time, I did have his name as "James B. Bodine". I saw a message from Ronny Bodine saying it was "James S. Bodine." It could be either way, but I'm going with "S" for now.

FamilySearch listed a son John who was born in 1825 in New Orleans, LA (or he died there). He died December 7, 1847. More proof is needed for who his children were. All these names here should be taken with a grain of salt since there isn't a whole lot of evidence.

Most of the dates and places for James and Elizabeth's children come from the FamilySearch site (and Ronny Bodine). This is also where I got Elizabeth McAnally's last name. I'm not sure Elizabeth was actually a McAnally. One transcription of the South Hickory Hill Cemetery lists her with the Beckham family. Why is that?

James was listed as a farmer in the 1880 Census of Jefferson Co., IL.

Here is a post by Ronny Bodine from February of 2003:

My information on this family is somewhat dated as I have not pursued it any in the past ten years, but here is what I had compiled up to that point.

James S. Bodine, born 19 December 1804 in Jackson County, Tennessee; died 4 February 1884 in Jefferson County, Illinois and buried there in South Hickory Hill Christian Church Cemetery. Married (1) about 1820, to Elizabeth ______, born 1804 in Tennessee, died 11 March 1851 and buried near her husband; (2) 7 October 1852, Jefferson County, to Nancy S. Dale, born 31 March 1821 in Tennessee; died 28 March 1909 and buried near her husband.

Children of James S. and Elizabeth Bodine were as follows:

1. Daughter, born 1820-1824, according to the 1830 census of Jefferson County, Illinois.

2. William Bodine, born 1823/6 in Tennessee, probably in McMinn County; living 1880 in McClellan Township, Jefferson County, Illinois with his family. Married (1) about 1843 to Martha McWright, born about 1824 in Tennessee, died 1860/7; (2) 16 June 1867, Jefferson County to Mary E. Rogers, born about 1846 in Tennessee, living 1880. William Bodine likely came to Jefferson County, Illinois with the rest of his family in the 1840s, but is absent from the 1850 Illinois census, although all of his children were born there. He is present as a farmer in Jefferson County from 1860 on.

4. Abigail Bodine, born 1830, Tennessee. Married 30 November 1848, Jefferson County, Illinois to John P. Newell, born 1818, Vermont. In 1870 the family was living near Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, but both appear to have died by 1880.

5. Talitha Bodine, born 1832, Jefferson County, Illinois. Married 7 November 1850, Jefferson County, to Isaac Waldo Place, born 1830, Ohio. In 1870 the family was still living in Jefferson County.

6. James Bodine, born 1833 in Tennessee, probably in McMinn County; living 1880 in Fannin County, Texas with his family. Married (1) 22 July 1852, Jefferson County to Elizabeth C. Bowman, born 25 February 1834, died 17 November 1852 and buried in South Hickory Hill Christian Church Cemetery, Jefferson County. Married (2) 27 September 1855, Jefferson County to Mary S. Green, born about 1835 in Illinois; living 1880. He came to Jefferson County with his parents in the 1840s, worked there as a farmer through 1870, and by 1880 had relocated to Fannin County, Texas.

7. Andrew Jackson Bodine, born 29 July 1835 in Jefferson County, Illinois; living 1900 with his family in McClellan Township, Jefferson County. Married (1) 9 October 1861, Jefferson County, to Margaret Emily Derrickson, born about 1838 in Ohio. The marriage ended in divorce and Margaret remarried in 1870 to Lorenzo D. Munsell; married (2) 15 August 1866, Jefferson County, to Mary Ellen Watson, born 24 February 1844 in Missouri, died 24 March 1903 and was buried in South Hickory Hill Christian Church Cemetery, Jefferson County.

8. George W. Bodine, born April 1838 in Jefferson County, Illinois; died 1919 and buried in South Hickory Hill Christian Church Cemetery, Jefferson County. Married 14 June 1860, Jefferson County, to Sarah E. Quinn, born 21 November 1844 in Illinois, died 8 November 1944 and buried with her husband. George W. 14. John Gazaway Bodine, born September 1859 in Jefferson County, Illinois; died 1928 and buried in South Hickory Hill Christian Church Cemetery, Jefferson County. Dave:
I just started helping a cousin who is starting on the genealogy of his BODINE line. I use a program and that creates a problem list of people entered in the program. It indicated that Elizabeth McANALLY was 10 year old when her first child was born. Went back and checked the 1850 census where she is found with her husband, and it shows her age as 46, which would make her the same age as her husband.

Attached is a transcription of the 1850 census:

From Ronny Bodine (April 8, 2018):

James Bodine and his two wives were buried in South Hickory Hill Christian Church Cemetery, Jefferson County. In 1819/1826, as James Bodine, Jr., he signed a petition to the Tennessee General Assemby as a resident of the Hiwassee District. He probably married in McMinn County, Tennessee where marriage records of that time are partially lost and incomplete.

The Jefferson County, Illinois Pioneer Association, organized 7 June 1872, in which James Bodine was a member, recorded that he was born 19 Dec 1804 in Jackson County, Tennessee, immigrated to Jefferson County 1 Oct 1826 and died there 4 Feb 1884. It is apparent that he maintained ties to McMinn County, Tennessee and travelled between the two places. His daughter Abigail was born 1830 in Tennessee and soon after he returned to Jefferson County to be enumerated there in the 1830 Illinois census. He evidently again returned to Tennessee in 1833 where his son was born. The McMinn County Court Minutes for 6 June 1836 record a $1.50 overcharge against James Bodine for his 1835 taxes (Minutes 1831-41, p. 261). The tax books for 1832-1872 are lost. This is the last record there of him. He went back to Jefferson County and remained there until his death engaged in farming. In 1870, the family was recorded under the name Bowdine.

His 1st wife, Elizabeth, is said to have been a McAnally, but evidence to support this has not been forthcoming and her supposed McAnally parentage has several contenders. But this theory seems to be supplanted by the Illinois Death Certificates of her son Andrew J. Bodine who died 27 April 1916 and daughter Euphany Caroline Bodine McCann who died 21 Jan 1928, and the Missouri Death Certificate of her daughter Elizabeth Bodine Osborn who died 3 March 1920, all of which state their parents were James Bodine and Elizabeth Wilson.
End of info.
