Notes for: James Vance Bodine

This information came from a query posted by Jason Clark on July 20, 1998 at www.genforum.com/bodine/. This does not match other info that came in about James Vance Bodine.

Looking for the parents of J.V. Bodine (b. 1844) who married Sarah Miller (b. 1865). Their children were as follows: James (b. 1869), Ida Bell (b. 1873), and Christopher (b. 1878). There may be other children, but this is what the 1880 Dunklin County, Missouri Census lists.

Ida Bell married Thomas Henry Dye a resident and farmer of Holcomb, Mo. His death was recorded in 1949. Ida's is unknown. They had 13 children, all were raised in Holcomb. Anyone with information Please E-mail me at jclark at bluegrass.net Thanks, Jason

I had the idea that this could be the James Bodine who is buried in the Wolf Prairie Cemetery in Jefferson County, Illinois. That James was born on January 11, 1846 and died October 4, 1934. However, I later found out that James Vance Bodine is buried in the Stanfield Cemetery in Clarkton, Dunklin County, Missouri. This info comes from Mary Boide. She also has a picture of this stone (pmboide at htc.net). Mary also says, "There is another tombstone nearby that is destroyed and practically unreadable. The only name we can see for sure is Bodine and, if you look at it from the right angle, possibly Sarah."

Rudie Slaughter (slaughter at earthling.net) is also descended from this family.

In the notes page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bodine/n12776.htm, you mention that James V. Bodine's gravestone reads "I Rest Wis Gav." I believe this actually reads "First Wis. Cav." After a period of military service for the Confederacy, he joined the First Wisconsin Cavalry during one of its expeditions into Dunklin County, Missouri.

I may have visited the gravestone during a genealogy tour with my grandmother Julia Ann (Bodine) Blankinship in the 1950s when I was still living in Dunklin County... At any rate, I hope to be able to seek it out on a future trip there.

Reading over my e-mail below, I want to amend something: I think "I Rest Wis Gav" meant "1 Regt. Wis. Cav.," not "First Wis. Cav." I find it was typical military style to write 1 Regt. to mean First Regiment, and census and military records show he was in the Wisconsin Cavalry's First Regiment.
