Notes for: William Bodine
He was a soldier in the American Revolution. See the file on his father. This family moved to Hamilton, Ohio. They were carriage makers there. This is Betty R's ancestor.
I think this must be the William Bodine family mentioned in the 1790 Census of Montgomery, Ulster Co., NY. They are listed as Family 85. The number of males and females pretty much matches up with the info I have on them; however, it also shows that I may be missing a child or two.

Family 84 is that of Jacob Bodine, Sr.: I would guess that this Jacob is William's brother. That census info more or less matches up with the info I have on them. The three males were probably Jacob himself and his two sons Charles and Lewis. The two females were probably his wife and youngest daughter.

amily 88 is an Ester Bodine with a relatively young family. I don't know who she is, but she is probably related. Mabye she is the widow of William's brother, Peter, or some other brother we don't know of. Here is that info:

n a message posted on the Orange County, New York GenWeb site (March 11, 1998), Ralph Weller wrote, "I have never found positive parents for William Bodine. There are three Bodines in the 1758 Provincal Troops from what I believe is Ulster County: Wm 20 yrs., farmer; Lewis 23 yrs; Isaac 24, weaver. This would make William born in 1738 if correct. There are no burial records in Montgomery Cemetery.
The following information about this family came from Betty A. Roach in February of 1999:
I have a number of family group sheets on this family. My mother-in-law was a Bodine, and I have worked on this line for some time. I have corresponded with a Marion Brown in Irvine, CA and she in working on the Buchanan line, that is also mingled with the Bodine line. Are your NY Bodines from Coeymans, NY? I think our Bodine line is from Alsace Lorraine, that little strip of land between Germany and France. The coloring in the Bodines I know is Dark brown hair and Dark brown eyes. So if I had to guess, I would say French. That country went back and forth many times. If you would like, and feel comfortable in sending your address, I will send you copies of what Marion sent to me along with the family group sheets I have. I'm not too good with PAF, so I don't know of a way to send you a copy Email. Is there a way? The Millspaugh, Milsbach, Constable and Buchanan families all seem to be linked. All are from NY area, some, Dutch, German, and Irish. In some of her information she states that the Bodines, were Huguenots. This was from info on the town of Montgomery, Orange, NY. Don't know if any of this fits, but let me know. One other thing, William Bodine/Bodyn and Maria Milsbach had seven children: Susanna, Francis, James, Benjamin, Catherine, Mary and John. Our line is Francis. His son Marcus, his son Naphtali, his son Lawrence, and his daughter Muriel Ruth, my mother-in-law. Maybe you have a connection.
Ralph Weller says his will is in Orange County, NY, Liber B, p. 297. It was made January 25, 1801 and probated in 1802. It gives his known children. The Millspaugh genealogy has a lot on this family. Some baptisms are in the Montgomery Reformed Church, one in the Lutheran Church in Montgomery and some have no record.

There is no direct evidence to make William Bodine the son of William Bodine, but he is associated with contemporary Bodines who appear to be siblings. His daughter Susanna was sponsored in 1761 by Johannes and Jane (Bodine) Velten. Additionally, he enlisted on the same day in the company of Lewis and Isaac Bodine, as noted next.
William Bodine was born 1737 or 1738, being aged 23 years on 7 April 1758, based on the following muster roll.

[Note: The listing of names for this muster roll was not alphabetical, thus the three Bodine men all were recruited as a group. The enlistees were primarily from communities in Orange and Ulster Counties.]
The Brick Reformed Church in Montgomery was organized in 1732 and the first baptism were recorded in April 1734 and marriages in October 1734. William Bodyn first appears in this church record on 2 May 1761 on the occasion of the baptism of his daughter, Susannah. The sponsors were Johannes Velte and his wife Jane Bodyn, whose marriage appears in church's marriage register on 30 April 1761. There can be little doubt that Jane was the sister of William Bodine.
The baptisms of their children, as recorded in the records of the Brick Reformed Church of Montgomery were as follows:

In addition, William and Maria Bodine served as sponsors to the following baptisms:

One of their children was baptised elsewhere:

William Bodine, grandson or great-grandson of Jean, was born about 1720. Unquestionably he belonged to the family of Jean Bodine, but the record of his birth has not been found. He was granted a large tract of land in Montgomery, in the village of Walden, and his homestead was occupied by several generations of his descendants. His name appears on the town records often, from 1768 to 1778, and also the name of Peter Bodine, doubtless his, son. Jacob Bodine also settled early in Walden with sons Charles and Lewis. He was also a son of William, it is believed, but possibly a brother.
The foregoing most likely refers to this William Bodine and not a presumed father of the same name. Afterall, this William was born in 1738, married in 1760 and appears in the town records from 1768 to 1778. The Bodine Farmstead was built in 1769 by William Bodine? he was the grandson of Jean Bodine, but that the record of his birth has not been found. He was granted a large tract of land 3,000 + Acres in the Town of Montgomery, outside the village of Walden, and his homestead was built in 1769 and occupied by several generations of his descendants, the last was about 1908 Hillah Terbell. The Bodine Farmhouse is located on Wallkill Road in the Town of Montgomery, just outside Walden, in Orange County, New York, USA. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
The will of William Bodine, Town of Montgomery, Orange County, State of New York was written Jan 25, 1801 and proved Jan 12, 1802. Therein are named wife Charity, sons Francis, James, and Benjamin; daughters Susanna Bewhanen, Cathrin Davie, and Mary. Executors: James Galatian Jr, Stephen Rea. Witnesses: David Gallatian, Samuel Hunter, and John Gallatian. (Orange County Wills, Liber B, page 297.)
On 15 Feb 1805, authorization was issued "To Mathew Terwilliger and Hezekiah Terwilliger brothers of Charity Bodine late of the Town of Montgomery in the County of Orange deceased--" to administer the estate of Charity Bodine. [Orange County Letters of Administration, vol. C, p. 101.]
