Notes for: John Washington Bodine

Judy Partida has a family Bible that dates from 1852. It may have been started by John W. Bodine and his wife, Margaret. However, someone has said that it appears as though John did not make the entries into the family Bible as previously thought. The Bible lists all their children as well as Margaret's death date. It goes no further than that, though. Here is what the Bible says (see also the Archives Room):

Wife Was Married
February 10th, 1852

John served in the War Between the States in Light Artillery Rogers Co. Someone (Judy Partida/) may have written to ask for these records (8/29/98). He may have died in the war (Virginia's Light Artillery, 1st Regiment, Batteries A-G).

According to The Virginia Regimental Histories Series, The Brooke, Fauquier, Loudoun and Alexandria Artillery by Michael J. Andrus, "John W. Bodine, Pvt. Enl 6/12/61 at Leesburg. Deserted 4/62." Whereas the Bible record shows John and Margaret A. Bodine married February 10, 1852, the county census records show the marriage on February 7, 1852 with Robert Power, father, consenting.

In the 1850 census, Margaret is listed as age 25 in her father's house.

Here is the 1860 Loudoun County Virginia Census, Family 578/581,

Burr W. Power ......................23, farmer (Margaret's brother)
John W. Bodine ............................34, farmer
Margaret A. ...................................26
Walter F. ..........................................2
Mary F. ..........................................7/12 (The age was right for Rosanah. Was her real name Mary F.?)

In the 1870 Census, Family 131/145, Margaret is now widowed and living with her parents and brothers.

Robert Powell Sr. ..................69 VA farmer
Arminta ...........................................58 VA
Joseph T. ........................................21 VA
Margaret A. Bodine ......................39 VA
Rosanna Bodine ...........................10 VA
Margaret Bodine .............................8 VA
Richard Powell ..............................17 VA

Some of their children are buried in Union Cemetery in Leesburg, Virginia. Margaret and Rosannah are there, but I'm not sure if any others are. Judy Partida sent me a picture of that family plot in the cemetery. See below. There are twelve family graves. In addition to Rosannah and her sister Maggie (Bodine) Moran, the family names in that plot are Meerdinck, Spencer, and Ball. I believe these others are mostly the children of the Morans.

From Ronny Bodine:

John Bodine worked as a farmer in Loudoun County. His youngest child was born in March 1862, but he was dead by 1870 and likely died shortly before or soon after that child's birth. Following the death of her husband, Margaret went to live with her parents, Robert and Arminta Power. A bible record maintained by her listed the births of her children, but did not include a record of her husband's death. Her own death was noted therein probably by her parents. Margaret (Power) Bodine's brother, Richard, married Rosalie Ada Bodine, daughter of John Bodine's brother Henry Harrison Bodine.

From Virginia Federal Census Records:
1860 (2 Aug) Loudoun Co.: Burr W. POWER 23 VA Farming, Jn. W. BEDINE 34 VA, Margaret A. 26, VA, Walter F. 2 VA, Mary F. 7/12 VA.
