Notes for: Catherine (Cathelyntje) Bodine

I don't know if it applies to this Catherine Bodine or not, but I found the following excerpt listed online from some old New Jersey marriage records:

#316; Joseph MATTISON of the Township of Amwell, and Joseph HANKINSON (Jr) of the Township of Reading, both in Hunterdon County... [bound to]... Wm FRANKLIN, Gov'r... 500 pounds... 5 May 1768. ... Joseph MATTISON... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Catherine BODINE of Reading Township... [w] Wm KIRKPATRICK, Daniel BUSKIRK.

My hunch is that the record above does apply to this Catherine. She is the daughter of Abraham Bodine and Mary Low, a family I believe is related to the John Bodine who married an Esther Mattison. I think John could be Abraham's grandson.

Others have said that this Catherine married a Barent Stryker, but I haven't seen the source of that (may be "The Stryker Family," by William N Stryker: 1979, p. 57). That Catherine could be the daughter of someone else. If this Catherine did marry Barent, then she would not have been the wife, also, of Joseph Mattison. The dates don't work out for that. See WorldConnect for more info on Barent and Catherine.

Here is more on that:

Hey Dave,

Catherine, daughter of Abraham Bodine & Mary Low was bapt. 3 Sept 1749 at the DRC of North Branch (aka Readington). There is some debate as to who she married, whether it was Joseph Mattison of Amwell Twp. in May 1768 or Barent Stryker on 6 March 1789.

When her father wrote his will on 14 June 1769 he named all of his children, but it appeared that none of his daughters were married and perhaps all were still minors. Surely would he not have named his daughter Catherine Mattison if she had married the year before?

It seems strange that if this Catherine married Barent Stryker in 1789 she was pushing 40. I was surprised to find no end to Barent Strykers living in the 1700 and 1800s in New Jersey. Perhaps she was a second wife?
