Notes for: Joseph Bodine

Ronny believes that this Joseph Bodine is the son of Francis Bodine, son of Francis Bodine, son of Jean Bodine of Medis, France. That is quite possible, but I think we still need more proof of that relationship.

Hey Dave,

...

I have been paging through the deeds of Monmouth County, NJ and stumbled across a deed of special note:

Deeds, Vol. I (not 1, rather the letter after H) 1783-1791, p. 501.

7 May 1790. James Cox & wife Rachel and JOSEPH BORDINE & wife Leah of Monmouth Co. to Joseph Cheeseman of same. For £100 sells 52 acres, being land confirmed to Rachel Cox and Leah Bordine by the last will and testament of their mother ___ Taylor wife of Thomas Taylor, Decd. Rec. 5 Oct 1790.

So, this deed furnishes the family name of Leah, and also places them as residents of Monmouth County before they located to Burlington County. Now, I could not figure out the first name of Leah's mother. It looks like Wm, short for William, but obviously not, perhaps Ann, but try as I might have not been able to locate this last will and testament of hers which would have to have been probated before 1790. Perhaps you will have better luck.

Ronny

From Ronny Bodine (May 5, 2020):

There is no direct proof that Joseph Bodine was the son of Francis and Abigail Bodine. However, Benajah Antrim served as estate administrator in 1848 to his father-in-law, John Bodine (1776-1848), of Pemberton Township (son of John, son of Francis and Abigail Bodine) and in 1849 served as estate administrator to Thomas Bodine (1791-1849) of Pemberton Township (son of Joseph, perhaps son of Francis and Abigail Bodine). If this relationship is correct then John and Thomas Bodine were first cousins.

Joseph and Leah Bodine are named as the parents of Thomas Bodine in the latter's 1849 death record.

Monmouth County, NJ Deeds, Vol. I 1783-1791.
p. 501. 7 May 1790. James Cox & Rachel and JOSEPH BORDINE & Leah of Monmouth Co. to Joseph Cheeseman of same. For £100 sells 52 acres, adjoining the lands of Peter Johnston and Watson Ker, being land confirmed to Rachel Cox & Leah Bordine by the last will and testament of their mother _[illegible]_ Taylor wife of Thomas Taylor, Decd. Not included is four acres sold by Thomas Taylor to Michael Johnston. Rec. 5 Oct 1790. [Note: In the original deed the name of Thomas Taylor's wife appears as “Wm.” Or “An.” See below where the name of the mother is Rachel Taylor. Her referenced will cannot be found in either the published New Jersey Archives Abstracts of Wills or the original probate records of Monmouth County.]

The reference to four acres being previously sold is attested in the following deed:
vol. I, p. 271. 14 Feb 1761. Thomas Taylor of Upper Freehold Township, Monmouth County, East Jersey to Michael Johnston, of the same, for £10 sells 4 acres in Freehold Township. The deed is signed by Thomas Taylor and Rachel Taylor and recorded 29 July 1788.

As an aside, looking at the neighbors, Peter Johnston and Watson Ker, a deed of 10 June 1790 from Watson Ker & wife Anna of Upperfreehold Township sold 31 ½ acres for £75 to James Cox. (Deeds T-521). Several deeds of Michael Johnston do not provide anything relevant.

Joseph Bodine appears in the tax records of Chesterfield Township, Burlington County as follows: 1795-Joseph Berdine, 1796-Joseph Bordine, 1797-Joseph Bordine, 1802-Joseph Bordine, 1805-Joseph Bordine, 1808-Joseph Burdine, 1811-Joseph Bodine.

Joseph Bodine appears to have died before the 1830 census. His wife, Leah, survived and must be the female aged 70-80 (thus born 1750-1760) living in the household of their son Thomas Bodine in 1830 in Northampton Township, Burlington County.
