Notes for: John Wycliffe

This family comes from An History of Richmondshire, in the North Riding of the County of York; together with those parts of the Everwicschire of Domesday which form The Wapentakes of Lonsdale, Ewecross, and Amunderness, in the Counties of York, Lancaster, and Westmoreland, by Thomas Dunham WHITAKER. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees (and others), 1823. 2 volumes. Here is the info given there on this family:

John Wycliffe, married the mother of Chief Justice Wray.

And here is additional information from The Genealogist (New Series), H. W. Forsyth Harwood, v. xxi. George Bell & Sons: London, 1905:

John, of Richmond, Auditor of Monastic lands; married Johan, daughter of Robert Jackson, of Gatenby, widow of Thomas Wray, of St. Nicholas, Richmond. Will November 12, 1562 (Richmond Wills, Surt. Soc. p. 186), to be buried at Richmond. They had issue (then it lists Robert, Jane, and Margery). Whitaker did not have a wife or kids for this John Wycliffe.

This last paragraph was clarified in Flower's Visitations of Yorkshire. It says the will was actually his wife's will and that she is a "widow" in that will.

In Harrison's pedigree, he has this John as the son of John Wycliffe and Katherine Surtees. And that John he has as the son of Robert Wycliffe and Margaret Conyers.
