Charles W. "Charlie" Bodine, 88, formerly of Fraley Street, Kane, died Wednesday evening, September 16, 2009 at The Lutheran Home at Kane, where he resided for the past few years. Born September 10, 1921 in Erie, he was the son of Dr. Francis S. and Maude Rackett Bodine. His family moved to Kane in the early 1930s where he spent the next 77 years. A 1939 graduate of Kane High School, he attended technical college studying design and drafting. He was drafted into the Army during WWII, serving in the Red Ball Express, and received the Purple Heart in 1944 for wounds received during combat in France. Upon his return to Kane, Mr. Bodine was employed as a draftsman for the Holgate Toy Company, then later at the Kane Republican in advertising and sales. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed the natural beauty of the surrounding area, and in earlier years, often hiked and cross-country skied. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Kane, the American Legion and Kane Lodge #566, F&AM. A local history buff, he was active in the Kane Depot Preservation Society and was instrumental in founding of the Friends' Memorial Public Library in Kane. Surviving are a sister, Barbara Callahan of Phoenix and five nephews. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a brother, Francis R. Bodine. Friends may call at the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home, Inc. in Kane on Friday from 10:00 until 11:00, at which time a service will be held there with the Rev. Brian Snyder, pastor of The Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro. Memorial contributions may be made to a church or charity of the donor's choice.
