Stephen Starrett Bodine (74), of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away on Good Friday, April 7, 2023 at his home after a long battle with progressive illness. Stephen was born in Texas City, Texas on January 22, 1949, and went on to graduate from Pearland High School in 1967, spending many of the intervening years traveling the country with his family. He obtained his pilot's license at age 15 and flew for the Civil Air Patrol. He attended Texas A&M University, where he played trumpet in the Aggie marching band. On August 16, 1969 he married his high school sweetheart Cynthia Lynn (Nolen) Bodine in Pearland, Texas. Before taking early medical retirement at age 52, Stephen worked as a sales manager for H&H Music Company in Houston, Texas; an admissions director for Phoenix Institute of Technology; and a union boilermaker working as a construction superintendent out of Phoenix Local 627, a job that enabled him and his family to travel extensively by RV. Stephen was a gifted storyteller and great lover of animals. He cooed and fussed over every baby he encountered, and never met a dog he didn't like. Despite his health, he found joy in pursuing a variety of hobbies, including: flying model airplanes, photography, antique cars, hunting, fishing, camping, playing the trumpet, coaching baseball, and listening to classical music. Stephen is survived by his wife Cynthia (Nolen) Bodine, sister Kay Outland; sons James Bodine, Matthew Bodine, and Andrew Bodine; daughter Tiana (Bodine) Gibbs; his grandchildren Anthony Bodine, Luke Bodine, Nicole Bodine, Erik Bodine, Brandon Bodine, and great grandson Luthor Bodine; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Stephen was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Kittie (Starrett) Bodine; his sister Robbie (Bodine) Remmers; his brother HM "Bud" Bodine; his sister Pamela (Bodine) Morrow; and his granddaughter Lorna Bodine. A private memorial service will be held in honor of Stephen on April 24, 2023 at his home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stephen's favorite charities: Wolfwood Refuge, Pilots & Paws Life Flight Rescue for Dogs, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, and the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research.
