Obituary, The Otsego Farmer (Cooperstown, NY) of Friday, 28 July 1944.
Found unconscious by his wife, Tuesday, Oscar Schriber, aged fifty-four, a farmer residing two miles north of South Edmeston, died shortly afteward of injuries suffered when kicked by a horse. Attracted by her husband's screams, Mrs. Schriber went to the horse barn to find the man on the floor near the horse's stall. Carried into the house, Mr. Schriber died before arrival of medical aid. He was pronounced dead by Dr. William P. Elliott of New Berlin. Mrs. Schriber was unable to explain how the accident happened. She said the horse heretofore had been gentle and easy to handle. She added that her husband had gone to the barn but a short time before the tragedy. Acting for Dr. E. C. Granger, Edmeston, coroner, Doctor Elliott, following an examination, stated the injuries indicated the man had been kicked twice. It is possible the second blow was inflicted when the man's body fell against the horse's rear legs. Injuries included a compound fracture of the skull, broken jaw and lacerations and abrasions of a shoulder and leg. Mrs. Schriber said she believed her husband may have been on his way to water the horse when the tragedy occured, since the horse had been used by her husband for mowing all the morning. Born November 20, 1889 in Port Alleghany, Pa., Mr. Schriber was the son of Robert and Ida Simmons Schriber. He was employed by a creamery in Walton and Buffalo for fifteen years before coming here five years ago. Since then he had worked for the Kraft-Phoenix company until about a year ago, when he moved to the farm. In 1914 in Walton he married Daisy Budine. Surviving besides his wife are seven children, Gerald, Atlanta; Charles Schriber and Mrs. Ethel Amidon, Buffalo; Robert, in Camp Pickett, Va.; Oscar, Jr., Budine and Beatrice, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Keeler and Miss Arda Schriber, both of Livingston Manor; also two brothers, Edgar, Middletown, and Chandler, Summit, N.J. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday from the home, with burial in Lamb cemetery, Columbus.
