Notes for: John Fletcher Bodine, Sr.

This is the John Bodine mentioned in the 1860 Census of Mercer County, New Jersey. He was listed as being 27, his wife Jane was 28, and their children, Frank and Harriet, were four and three years old (see roll 698, p. 121).

In 1860-1900, John and Elizabeth Bodine lived in Trenton where John was engaged as a house painter. In 1900, he reported that in 45 years of marriage his wife Jane had borne 5 children, all of whom were then living.

Word was received in this city yesterday of the death at Avon-by-the-Sea of John F. Bodine, who had been a general painter in this city for forty years. He last resided at 140 South Stockton street, but about four years ago removed to the seashore. About two years since he suffered from a stroke of paralysis, and since then had been twice stricken. He was bedfast for three weeks and death occured on Friday. There will be funeral services at his late home tomorrow evening and on Tuesday morning the remains will be conveyed to Trenton and services will be held at 10 A.M. in the First M. E. Church. Fred D. Stuart Lodge, No. 154, I. O. O. F., is invited to attend. Deceased was in his seventy-second year and last December he and Mrs. Bodine celebrated the golden jubilee of their marriage. Five children survive--Frank, who resides at Avon; Mrs. Hattie L. Hand of Newark, and Charles, John and Enoch, all of this city.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jane E. Bodine, widow of John S. Bodine, formerly of this city, who died at Avon Saturday, will be held in the First M. E. Church here tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. Interment, under direction of Swayze, will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Bodine left Trenton about nine years ago. While here, Mrs. Bodine was active in the affairs of the First M. E. Church. A daughter, Mrs. Hattie L. Hand and two sons, Frank B. and Charles Bodine, survive. Charles Clifford Hand, the Pennington Avenue painter, is a grandson of the deceased woman.
