Notes for: Abraham Bodine

The following biography comes from chapter L of "BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES: BORORGH OF HUGHSVILLE, AND WOLF (INCLUDING PICTURE ROCKS), SHREWSBURY, AND PENN TOWNSHIPS" in Lycoming County, PA.

CORNELIUS BODINE was descended from Huguenots who settled in New Jersey and New York. He was born in 1757, and settled in the vicinity of Hughesville. He married Margaret Sutphen, and with her migrated to Lycoming county in 1802. They subsequently settled in Seneca county, New York, where Mr. Bodine died on June 12, 1820, and Mrs. Bodine, on November 15, 1824. Their children were Charles, Isaac, Peter, John, Gilbert, George, Abraham, and Cornelius. Abraham was born in Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, and was twice married; his first wife was Mercy Paxon, and to this union were born five children: John; Charles; George; Margaret, and Elizabeth; his second wife was Barbara Cruze, by whom he had one son, Russell. Charles Bodine, son of Abraham Bodine, was a merchant and one of the most prominent and enterprising men of Hughesville during his life. He married Maria Christman, and to them were born five children: Clinton, deceased; C. Christman, deceased; De Witt; Milton, and Mary, who is deceased. Charles Bodine died in 1850, and his wife, February 26,1880.

Abraham's daughter, Elizabeth McConnell, lists her father as born in NJ and her mother in PA. This is in the 1880 Census of Richmond, McHenry Co., IL. Elizabeth's husband's parents were born in Prussia.

Abraham Bodine did not move to the Lake Country of New York with his father, but remained on the West Branch of the Susquehanna near Muncy, Pennsylvania ("History of the West Branch Valley," p. 523).

He and Barbara Cruze appear to have lived in a house that is now called the Bodine House in Muncy, Pennsylvania. It may have just been Barbara who lived there since she appears to have moved in in 1863. That would be the year after Abraham died. It is now a bed & breakfast (see www.bodinehouse.com).

An article on Abraham's grandson, DeWitt Bodine, says Abraham was a shopkeeper. See DeWitt's Notes page.

Here is a message I received the present owners:

Dave Bodine:

The Bodine House B & B got it's name because there were, reportedly 6 or 7 generations of Bodine relatives that lived here in the house tat we purchased in 1978. Most weren't named Bodine however, because the house was passed down thru daughters, not sons. The first Bodine to live here was Barbara Bodine who came circa 1863 from somewhere in northern Pa. There is a town named "Bodines" north of here along state rt. 14.

When we decided to open a B & B around 1983, we looked for a name and settled on Bodine, because our name is Smith, and the first owner of the house was a Mr. Gray. So we didn't want it to be called the "Smith House" or the "Gray House". Bodine sounded like a very melodious name, so that is what we picked.

David Smith

The next message came from Robert Bodine Reuther, a descendant of those who last lived in the "Bodine House":

Dave,

I know the people who own the B&B. My parents know them fairly well (Muncy is a small town, 2000 people in the borough). I even stayed there once about 3 years ago during my 30th high school class reunion with my wife and stepdaughter... if "Barbara" first lived there in 1863, then I am pretty sure that was Barbara Cruze Bodine. My mother knows that her grandfather, Charles Hawley Bodine, raised his family there. That is, her father, Murray was raised with his two sisters there. My mother also says that Charles was raised by his grandfather and grandmother, Abraham and Barbara (Cruze) Bodine after his father, Russel, died at a relatively early age (late 30s?). Don't know what happened to Russel's mother, Lucretia. I am going to try to get tombstone information the next time I am in Muncy.

Thus, it seems likely that Abraham and Barbara owned the house. When Charles and Annie died, my great aunt, Fannie Hawley Bodine Dunlap, lived there until she died. After she died, it was passed to one of her daughters, Helen, until she remarried in 1975 to Homer Opp, at which time she sold the house and moved in with her new husband...

Here is a message from the Bodine Family Forum that probably mentions this Abraham Bodine, but it is not for sure:

Joan Best sent me a couple of deeds that involved Abraham Bodine. I think they are from Columbia Co., PA. The first is dated April 15, 1831 (Vol. G. pp. 697-698). It is between Rebecca Wooliver (widow of Abraham Wooliver) and George Woodley & wife, the part of the first part, and Abraham Bodine, the party of the second part. The land of Abraham Wooliver is conveyed to Abraham Bodine for one dollar. This land is about 105 acres and borders that of Ezra Eves. These people are not necessarily related to Abraham Bodine. Maybe they owed him some money.

Then, on April 6, 1839, Abraham Bodine and Barbara his wife sell the same property for $400 to an Edward Carence/Covenee. (His last name is difficult to read.) This deed is in Book 12, pp. 258-259.

There isn't much in the way of genealogical information in these deeds. Abraham Wooliver died in Mount Pleasant Township, Columbia Co., PA. His will was dated October 4, 1827 at Danville. In the first deed, Abraham Bodine is listed as being from Muncy Creek Twp., Lycoming Co., PA. In the second deed, he is listed as being from Wolf Twp., Lycoming Co.
