Notes for: Adaline ("Addah") Van Deventer

The following info came from queries and answers posted at www.genforum.com/vandeventer/. This was posted by Sue Harris on April 17, 1998:

Adaline "Addah" Vandeventer b ca 1740, m Richard Alexander Skinner ca 1759, probably NJ. They went to Loudoun Co., VA, by 1769, when on tax list. Both d near Aldie 1810. On 1769 tax list with them were Nicholas Wyckoff & wife Margaret, nee Vandeventer. Also in Loudoun was Margaret's brother Isaac Vandeventer. Margaret, b 1731, & Isaac, b 1747, were children of Isaac Vandeventer & Sarah Couwenhoven, who had 8 known children, b 1731-1753, all baptized in NJ, but no Adaline baptized. It has been suggested Adaline was daughter of Jan Vandeventer & Ann Wynant, but their other children born 1713-1726, so she seems too young to be their daughter. Does anyone know who Adaline's parents were?

In an email in February of 1999, Sue said she thought Adaline is probably the daughter of Isaac Vandeventer and Sara Couvenhoven.

I'm the Sarah Kirby that Sue Wilcox referred you to. It's not on my Web page yet, but I have a little information on Adaline. Unfortunately, her parents aren't known in my source either. I looked at Margaret V. & Nicholas Wyckoff.

If you look at the dates of Isaac & Sarah's children, of whom Margaret was one, there is a gap between 1735 and 1742. Even though you haven't found a baptism record, it is theoretically possible that Adaline was a sister. The gap is big enough that Isaac may have left the area and then returned. Have you tried looking at Isaac's property records?

My major source of information for the VanDeventers are the first and second editions of a book called "The Van Deventer Family". The first edition was published in 1943 and compiled by Christobelle Van Deventer. The second edtion was published in 1978 by Paul J. Vandevander.

I'm trying to set up my personal website as a general exchange for Van Deventer information (I'll be adding a link to this genforum soon.) http://freeweb.pdq.net/skirby/VanDeventer.htm

The VanDeventer book has the following on p226:
"Adeline (or Adelaide) Van Deventer, m. ca 1762, Richard Alexander Skinner, son of Cornelius Skinner, son of Richard Skinner, of near Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., N.J. Richard A. Skinner and is wife, Adeline, went from N.J. to Loudon Co., Va., and are bd. at Aldie. Her descent is not known." [Here follows the proposition of Ann Wynant & Jan as parents, but I agree with you that they are too old.]

I am decended from the Skinner line. I have the parents of Adeline Van Deventer as Jan Van Deventer (father), and Ann Wynant (mother). Jan is the son of Jacobus Van Deventer and Femmejte Barents Ridder. Ann is the daughter of Pieterse Wynat and (first name unknown) Van Neuyse. If you would like more info please let me know. On p58 of the VanDeventer book it says "He [Nicholas Wyckoff] went from N.J. to Loudon Co., Va. in 1769. Tithe lists of that year show him living with Richard Skinner. He purchased land in the southeastern part of the county."

On p57&8 it says that Isaac & Sarah had their children baptized at two churches: Raritan & Readington, NJ. Perhaps there was a third church, that has not yet been discovered. Or, perhaps there is a gap in the baptism records of one of the churches. If the latter, there may be other church records that could be used. What about a marriage record, civil or church, which sometimes mentioned parentage, and the witnesses were frequently relatives? Since we know where Adaline was buried, have you looked for civil or church records which might mention her death?
