Notes for: Benjamin Rightmire

From information in Mary Evans' will, he is most likely Orrionehe's husband. Mary Evans was Orrionehe's aunt, originally Mary Bodine. In Mary Evans' will of December 20, 1787 and proved September 10, 1789, she mentions as a legatee, John Bodine, son of Benjamin Rightmire's wife (Loudoun Co. Wills, Book D, pp. 10-12). The image below is an abstract of that will. My thanks to Sondra Foley for providing it:

He issued a bill of sale to Isaac Bodine, September 14, 1784 (Loudoun Co. Court Orders, Book H, p. 378).

My wife is a Rightmire. Recently we made a tie back to James Rightmire of Loudoun Co., VA. He is believed to be the father of several Rightmires with origins in that area -- Benjamin is specifically listed as his son in two of the Tithables for Loudoun. Most of Benjamin & Orrionehe's children I got from your site; then searched web to find additional descendants. Like Mike Rightmire, I have been "collecting" Rightmires for several years.

James Rightmire (of Loudoun Co.) was born 1734-1740 or before and died about 1795--perhaps at over age 60. James Rightmire (of Loudoun Co.) is the father of Benjamin Rightmire, John Rightmire (m. Anna Ashford) and James Rightmire (m. Elizabeth Daugherty)--and by inference then, there are other children--see subsequent paragraph. James' wife and the mother of the children is unknown (perhaps Jane -- a Jane Rightmire is called to testify on behalf of John Rightmire in Monongalia Co. on 07/11/1808).

The many years between Benjamin's birth of about 1754-1760 and Robert (believed to be the last son ) about 1785-1788, may indicate more than one wife for James.

1. My rationale to establish James' approximate year of birth is as follows:
His son, Benjamin, is listed in the tithables for 1776 and was at least age 16 (maybe 21) at that time. Benjamin does not appear to be listed in 1775, but James does, so Benjamin not 16 by that time. Thus, Benjamin appears to have been born 1754-1760. Also, Benjamin married Orrionehe Bodine. Orrionehe apparently had a son (maybe born out of wedlock), John M. Bodine, b. Abt. 1769. My reasoning then says Orrionehe would have been at least age 13-15 at his birth, so she was born about 1754. In most circumstances, a husband is about the same age as his wife or a little older. So, I reason that Benjamin must have been born about 1754 or earlier. Assuming James was age 20 at the birth of Benjamin (apparently firstborn son), then James was born 1734-1740.

2. The following rationale establishes James' approximate year of death. James is listed in the tithables for 1794 and there is no 1795 listing; James is not listed in 1796, 1797, nor 1798, but John (his son) is listed in these years. Since he is elderly (over 55) and is not listed in the 1795-1798 tithables, I presume he has died. A James Rightmire is listed in 1799; he is by himself and has no slaves nor horses. In earlier years, James had horses. Therefore, this is believed to be his son, James Rightmire (m. Elizabeth Daugherty). This James was born about 1779 and would have been over 16 and maybe 21 in 1799. It should be noted that in 1796 John's listing includes two males, one of which could be his father, but is probably his brother, James who would have been age 16-17.

Dave
I do not know where nor when Benjamin and Orrionche died, but I believe Kentucky between 1801-1809. Last record (so far) for Benjamin in Loudoun Co is Nov 6, 1796. Thus, I believe that is about the time they moved to Kentucky. I have found no record of them in Kentucky--just their children. This leaves me in a quandry about how someone made the association of the children with Benjamin and Orrionche as parents. ?? Richard Skinner is identified as "Covert, Rubin married Anna Rickmire (german), an orphan raised by Richard Skinner. Surety, Richard Skinner, June 2, 1809." Richard Skinner (you know) m. March 24, 1801 Mary Bodine, granddaughter of Cornelius Bodine. Some say Richard's marriage was in Loudoun Co, but Kentucky marriage book says married in Kentucky! I have presumed that Anna was probably placed with Richard Skinner when he was a "family," that is he was married. Thus I believe Benjamin and probably Orrionche died 1801-1809; Orrionche may have died later, but unable to support family after Benjamin's death. The date of the court action placing Anna with Skinners would be helpful--but I don't have it. Based on index for 1810 Kentucky census, Cornelius Rightmire is in Kentucky, and appears to be only "Rightmire" in census. I have not yet reviewed actual census [Rickmore, Cors., Nelson Co., pg 30; Boydine, Thomas, Logan Co., pg 181; Bodine, Chas., Nelson Co.; pg 5; Bodine, Isaac, Nelson Co.; pg 9; Bodine, Jno., Nelson Co.; pg 5--is this last one John M. Bodine, son of Orrionche or John Bodine, son of Cornelius?]

Subject: Jacob Rightmire/Rickmire in KY

Dave--
It has been a while since you heard from me. For Jacob Rightmire (son of Cornelius Rightmire) you have the note: "He was in Nelson County, Kentucky as late as the 1830 Census." Recent events call this into question. They also might impact your Van Derbilts?? I'll give you the full detail, although some is of no interest to you.
"Feb. 27, 1838 - Mar. 12, 1838. Jacob Rickmire. Jacob bequeathes estate to niece Nancy Polly and her husband Merritt Polly. Also to sister Mary Wilcox. Children of Nancy Polly include her sister Ann Eliza McCue [?] and to his brother Cornelius Rickmire, Jacob bequeathes land in Edgar County Illinois. Executors are Merrit Polly and Mary Wilcox."

Full consideration of this adds a Jacob as a child of Benjamin & Orrionehe Rightmire and causes a major change in much of the data for the children of James & Sarah (Van Pelt) Rightmire (not our line). Note above the reference to Wilcox; data we have supports that Mary (Rightmire) Wilcox was a sister to Cornelius--and now Jacob; there is no indication that Jacob V. Rightmire had a Mary (Rightmire) Wilcox as a sister.

To me this indicates that Benjamin & Orrionehe Rightmire's son, Cornelius, had a brother, Jacob. This is a new brother--no prior evidence that I know of. Part of the issue is that Lawrence V. Rickard' s document (2124 Rt 9, Kinderhook, NY 12106, September 1989, revised May 1996, Apr 1999, May 2003) identifies this Jacob as follows: "JACOB RIGHTMYER, son (14) Lewis Rightmyer and Elenor Vanderbilt, b 7 Jun 1800 (family bible), d Mar 1838 (Pester) in Nelson County, KY," and a brother to Cornelius Vanderbilt.

I feel certain that this is wrong, that this Jacob is a son of Benjamin and Orrionehe Rightmire.
