Notes for: John Kilgo Godbey

John was named for Bishop John Carlisle Kilgo of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was ordained in 1910 by John Cowpir Granbery who himself was ordained in 1882.

GODBEY, JOHN K., age 96, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. C.C. Godbey; brothers, Edgar, Luther, Paul, and twin brother: Rev. James Godbey; sisters, Eva Godbey and Charlyn Collins. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Tommie Duncan Godbey; two sons, Paul of Birmingham and Lee (Sandy) Godbey, of Goose Creek, S.C.; one daughter, Marie Godbey of Birmingham; his sister, Annie Myrle (George) Arnold of Trussville; sister-in-laws, June Godbey of Gadsden and Earline Godbey of Athens. Mr. Godbey was a member of Irondale United Methodist Church. He graduated from Collinsville High School and attended Hiawassee College and graduated from Florence Teachers College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, where he served in Intelligence in the Pacific Theater and attained the rank of Chief Photographer Mate. He was a long time employee of Loveman's Dept. Store. He held several positions as a salesman for several photographic companies. He retired from UAB after 20 years of service at the age of 92. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to the Irondale United Methodist Church capital funds campaign or Fairhaven Fountain of Love in Birmingham. The family would like to extend their special appreciation to the staff and caregivers of Affinity Hospice. Visitation will be Friday, October 10, 2008 from 5 until 7 P.M. at Ridout's Trussville Chapel. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Irondale United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ed Sims and Tielle DeRamus officiating. Interment will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
