Notes for: William Martin

William Martin was an early Muhlenberg county manufacturer of plug tobacco, shipping his product as far as New Orleans. The business passed on to his sons, Dabney and Ellington, who grew the business with the establishment of the "Greenville Tobacco" brand, which sold well all over the south, and earned them a substantial fortune prior to the Civil War. The war, however, proved disastrous and the brother's barely made it through it before selling out in 1869.
