Notes for: Nancy Porter Winn

From information furnished by Tom Bodine of San Augustine County, Nancy and her husband both had prior marriages. Her full name is Nancy Porter Anthony Ellington Taylor.

I later got this info:

Dear Dave:

Your Bodine web site has been invaluable to me in seeking information about my own Bodine ancestry. I greatly appreciate the effort you have made in presenting this material, and offer my personal thanks to you.

New information has come to light about my great-grandmother, whom we usually list as Nancy Porter Anthony (Ellington) Taylor. It turns out that she was actually Nancy Porter Winn, the oldest daughter of Joseph Edwin Winn and Elvira Ann Anthony. A messy divorce from her first husband, Andrew Middleton "Mid" Ellington, had apparently led her to abjure her own surname "Winn" entirely, and to adopt her mother's maiden name of "Anthony" --- particularly because he later married a different one of the Winn girls! This basic fact is the key to unlocking an accurate family history.

Our Winn (Wynn, Wynne) family connection has been thoroughly researched, and extends through the House of Burgesses in colonial Virginia and back to 17th-century Canterbury, England, where the family was politically prominent. There is even a distant connection to Pocahontas along the way . . . .

Both the Anthony family and the Bodine family were early settlers of San Augustine TX (1825-35), when it was still part of Mexico. The Anthony line came through Orange/Alamance County NC, where I recently visited and photographed gravesites of my Anthony, Schofner and Fogleman forebears. Jim Bodine (from whom you have received so much valuable Bodine material) lives today on a portion of the original Mexican land grant to Nimrod "Rhoddy" Anthony, north of San Augustine.

In what form would you like to receive this new information? At present I simply have names and places from secondary sources and the internet, extending to multiple family origins in Germany and in England. I am in the process of gathering proofs, which will probably take years, so I am hesitant to produce GEDCOM files for distribution just yet.

Please let me know your wishes.
