The 1936 obituary of Garrett Bodine reports that Sue Cathey was an adopted daughter. This adoption must have taken place after January 1920, as Sue was not living with the Bodine family at that time.

From Duval County, Florida Marriage Records:
J. Astor Cathey, 21, born in GA, clerk, of 126 B. Schoffield Street, Jacksonville AND Sue Bodine, 18, born in Louisiana, of 112 Atlantic Blvd., So. Jacksonville, were married 28 May 1930 in Jacksonville by Delsia E. Zelt, Notary Public. The marriage license noted neither party had ever been married and that Sue's parents were deceased. Mrs. F. H. McLain, sister of the bride, gave her consent. [Note: Mrs. F. H. McLain would be Ida Louise Horn (1912-1994) who married Fred Hudson McLain in 1932 in Jacksonville.]

On 16 Oct 1940, John Astor Cathey of Savannah, Georgia, registered for the World War II Draft. He reported he was born 15 July 1912 in Douglas, Georgia, worked for the Atlantic Coast Novelty Company, and named Sue Bodine Cathey, his wife, as his next of kin.
